MTB Pedal suggestions?

Hey ST’ers!

I will soon be purchasing my first 29er. I was wondering if anyone had any pedal suggestions?

I will ask the shop I am purchasing it from but I also was wondering if anyone had suggestions of ones to look at, or stay away from?

I will be doing a few xterra races if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

I’ve been riding and racing MTB’s since the mid-1980’s. Its a very personal choice but I have been riding Crank Bros Eggbeaters for the past 8 years. They clear mud like no other pedal. They just hurt like a son of a bitch when you miss a pedal and your shin slams into them at full force. But I guess any pedal would.

Crank Brothers Candy 2

Great, thanks!

id go xt or xtr. ive been on many rides when crank brother pedals have failed, never seen an xtr fail (though they definitely do). But, there is a reason they weigh so much more, and that is in the robustness of the design. unless you’re riding in belgium cross races, the mud clearing abilities of a shimano pedal will be more than adequate for you.

Speedplay frogs for me.

Had shimano and time ATAC before I tried the Frogs.
Never looked back once I tried the speedplays.

I have to go with %FTP here. The running joke isnt IF a CB pedal will fail, but when!! Here in New England, every race, I see a dead CB pedal on the course mid-race. Go with Shimano or Time and call it done.

Improperly maintained CB pedals will fail, they do require maintenance like any other piece of equipment. Most people blow it off until it fails.

I hate Crank Bros pedals with a passion. I had quite a few accidental releases from hitting the pedal on things, which then releases the opposite bails.

Been using the Time ATAC XC for about three years now and love them.

Shed mud well. Enter easy. No accidental release. Stable. Lock securely.

Like Crank Bros, also available in formats with larger platforms.

In 2010 the bearings were redesigned and much improved over the old EB design. Its a personal choice I guess. I am pretty lightweight @ 140lbs so maybe that’s why I have not had the issues you describe.

XT or xtr, no other pedal is as secure, with the right maintenance.

I started on SPDs and recently tried ATACs, I went back to Crank Brothers. I have both Eggbeaters and Candys. Quality can be hit and miss, but I really like them. Of course, I ride past their HQ all of the time, so I can throw them at their window if I’m that mad…

XTR for me. Work like a charm. Easy to get out of when you need to bail but yet hold you in when you don’t mean to bail. Plus they are easy to clip into when you need to get clipped in quickly on a restart

I would venture to guess that you are probably a better MTBer than I am, and that is why you didn’t have issues. That said, as soon as I switched to Time ATACs, I stopped having the problem, so whether I was shitty or not, I didn’t have problems on the Time. Dunno whether or not I’d have them on the new CB design. But I’m pretty happy with Time. And so is Julian Absalon. And lots of other guys…

Switched to crank brothers eggbeaters three years ago and will never use another pedal. The only time I hate them is when I walk my bike to the car and it never fails that one of them slams the shin.

Time ATACs for XC, flats for AM/burly stuff where I want to be able to ditch the bike and get away quickly.

(I should clarify that “flats” are Straitline AMP pedals with pins, and I wear grippy rubber soled Five Ten shoes with them)

XT or xtr, no other pedal is as secure, with the right maintenance.

Look S-Track is the most secure. By far.
But, Shimano is the all around winner, Followed closely by Time.

Be aware that egg beaters (non candy) are disposable pedals. They only last a year. I’ve gone thru countless sets (all warranties) yet candies have been fine. There is a reason the warranty is so long.

I rode Time for many a years and are a very good choice. On my fixie and on my cross bike I have the Xpedo M Force 4-B and M Force 4-A pedals. They great too and use a Shimano cleat. I would highly recommend either.

XTR pedals. I’ve a pair for 14 or 15 years (I think they were call 747s then) and they still work great.
