Ok, I’ve heard of people using mtb cassettes on road bikes (for mt washington hill climb). Are shimano mtb and road cassettes and chains compatable?
Could I use a 9 speed 11-32 XT cassette on my P2k if i was planning on doing some hilly riding? I’m a spinner and i like spinning up hills rather than mashing and standing.
OK- the real reason is that i’m doing IMLP and I haven’t been training (at all) and i don’t think my legs will be in great shape for the run if i have to hit those hills twice with my current gearing
The cassettes are compatible. However, if you’re using a short cage derailler, it probably doesn’t have enough capacity to support the delta between a 39x12 low and a 53x32 max. You’d need to run a road triple rear derailler, or a medium or long cage mountain bike rear derailler.
FWIW - I can run an XT 11-32 cassette on my 9spd CX bike w/Ultegra short cage…my HHH set-up. The Shimano tech manual says this won’t work. 128 miles later w/o any problems or mishifts.
However, your best bet for IMLP would be to run a 12-27 or 12-28. Assuming you have a 53/39, I can’t imagine why you would need any less roll-out…
Agreed, I have done that loop no less than 16 times now…I have never had anything larger than 11-23 and was able to average a fastest of 23.8mph (then walk 60% of the run)
