I am about 8 weeks away from a Half Ironman down here in Australia.
As a process in building some leg strength, I have exchanged one of my mid-week rides off the Road bike and hopped onto my Mountainbike.
As it is Winter here at the moment, I will sometimes exchange part or all of my weekend long ride (mix up maybe an hour or so on Road bike on windtrainer before blasting around for a couple more hours on the MTB) if the weather is crap outside.
…and I must say…its great AT training and really awesome for building the leg strength…
I know specificity is valuable but I am already seeing benefits across to my road based training and keeps the mind and body fresh from countless hours just slaving on a windtrainer.
Anyone else adopt a similar approach - even as they have their road or tri races are fast approaching?
I am of a mind to keep one MTB session in my schedule weekly…
Mountain bike riding has made my all-around riding stronger, and way more fun! I plan to keep one mtb ride in next winter when I’m training for IM AZ (weather permitting).
No, I decided I need to stay home this weekend, I’ve been driving so much the past few weekends, going to races. Torn Shirt is a 5.5 hour drive me, so I’m taking it easy and staying home. I think my next xterra will be Lock4 in TN on July 8 (4 hr drive from my house). Will you be coming to either of the IN races in July or August?
I’m planning on coming to both DINO races as of now. If I do well this weekend I might skip one, but might not.
We’ll have to be sure to meet up at the next race, I feel bad we got to Pelham so early! But for us it was ride in the AM or sit in the hotel lobby since our room wasn’t ready. Easy choice there!
As I had mentioned in another thread about this topic today, I also ride my MTB one day a week. I’ll do an hour every Monday followed by a 2,000 yard swim. I always train alone and really need a break from the monotony of riding the same road routes on my tri bike, and there are plenty of nice, safe, but quite steep dirt fire roads around my house, so I get some solid leg training on the hills and enjoy the ride without having to worry about traffic. I generally do about 3-4 half IM’s and one IM a year as well as 6 or 7 other shorter races in a season and haven’t seen any ill effects as a result of putting time in on the mtb.
