i am running a 30 up front (took the 42/52 rings off of the crankset) and a mtb cassette 32 in the back. last year ran a 32 up front with a 32 in back but because of some gearing issues, couldn’t get into the 32 in the back so had to muscle/grind up with the 28. ouch.
don’t laugh, you’ll need 1:1 unless you are an uberclimber.
This is awesome! I wouldn’t even go near Mt. Washington with my hiking boots when I lived in NH for a summer (I read too many ill-fated Mt. Washington hiking adventure books), but to ride up the Auto Road on a bicycle–that’d be cool! And what a story!
I was there in support and as a spectator. You left out a couple of important points that make The Rockpile THE SUFFERFEST.
Usually it is raining
Wind speed average is over 35 MPH
It can be warm and sunny in the valley and freezing on the summit
There are NO flats stretches on the road.
There first year I was there it was 70F in the valley, but on the summit, we had 60 to 70 mph winds with hail. Some riders were blown off their bikes.
eyebike, you are correct. last year was my first and it rained. it made for the unpaved section to be quite a bear. couldn’t stand up as the rear wheel would just spin out in the mud. had to sit and mash through it. also, i remember going around a switchback above the treeline, standing up into a 40mph gust, reduced to a temporary track stand. And I weigh in at 185!
NO flat stretches either, just not so steep sections
Dev, a bike stud like you could probablly get away with a 39x32. it’s amazing how close, relatively speaking, the run times are to the bike times.
after my last stage race ended up with back pain that I couldn’t shake and just got it checked out - looks like my SI joint is messed up and needs some treatment – I’m reduced to “easy bike rides and no hills” for at least the next week! … this puts a “???” on my participation … will keep you posted
what was you time going up the Mt. Washington last year?
