Moving to Switzerland for a year... Holy crap what do I do now!? (long)

Allow me to describe how this incredible oppertunity has come my way.

I’m a 3rd year Engineering student at the University of Calgary, in Calgary, AB, Canada. At the end of the upcoming winter semester I will officially begin a year-long internship. By the grace of all that is holy, I managed to land an awesome, (english-speaking), job at the University of Zurich, beginning June 1, 2006, lasting until June 1, 2007, god forbid anything should happen to me or my position during that time.

I recieved the job offer only a few days ago, and my mind has been racing ever since, trying to figure out all the logistics. At the tender age of 20, I’ve never lived away from home, since I’m only 8km from School and the rent is free. I’ve never attempted travelling with more than 1 suitcase, let alone a bike or multiple bikes. Thankfully I’ve travelled to Europe, and can speak the barest amount of German, so hopefully I will not be totally overwhelmed.

Also, I know several students currently taking Internships in Switzerland, including the student whom I am replacing come spring-time. And I will be joined by several other students from my University with other jobs in Switzerland, mostly in Baden, which is potentially where I will be actually living.

But there are still lots of things to work out:

I have 2 Bikes. My ~$700 CDN Commuter Specialized Sirrus, and my ~$3000 Cervelo P2-SL. I am definetly taking the Cervelo, but I am undecided whether to take my Commuter over, or to just buy another one once I get to Switzerland, perhaps even a nicer, actual, Road Bike.

Apparently, Air Fare to Zurich is buttloads more than if I fly to a nearby country and take the train the rest of the way. My Girlfriend found on the internet that flying to Milan, then train to Zurich saves almost $700 over a direct flight. But that would be a friggin nightmare with a load of luggage!

I believe that sending the majority my clothes, and whatever else I need for a year of living on my own, and my Bike(s) via air freight to Zurich, and then picking them up once I arrive is obviously the answer here. For the bikes, the way some IM travellers go, getting a local bike shop to pack their bikes, and shipping it to a bike shop at the destination to rebuild the bike and prep it for the race seems like an attractive idea, however I need to find a Bike shop in Zurich that would do this, and can speak English. Would I need to get a hard plastic bike case, or would a cardboard jobby do it? How much are the hard cases? That would probably affect my “bring the commuter” decision.

Once I get to Switzerland, I’ll be wanting to do some sprint/olympic Triathlons this upcoming season, and probably an Iron-Distance in 2007 (IM Swiss, IM Germany, Roth, IM France, who knows!?). http://www.trisuisse.ch/ Appears to be the national governing body, and probably the place to go to for advice there, but if any Swiss twitchers have advice, I’m more than glad to hear it.

I also will want to train of course. I imagine that the university will have a pool, and hopefully a master’s group or tri club. Once again if a swiss twitcher knows for sure I’d love to hear it.

Thats most of what I have been agonizing over so far, of the Tri-related stuff that is. Right now I have my work visa application to keep me busy, and hopefully I can get that out of the way quickly so I can tackle all the other hurdles!

p.s. any way to find out dates for IM races in the semi-distant future, or does only Kona do that?

Just relax and have fun. The fact your Canadian will go a long way.

Hi, I just wrote a real long reply and lost the post somehow… f**************!

ok, shorter version now,

to my knowledge (and I am from Switzerland) it is not more expensive to fly to Zurich than any other place/hub in Europe. I just flew from Miami to Basel (about 45min from ZH) via Paris for 635$ all taxes included. It depends on the season during which you fly, fly to Paris, Frankfurt or London then connect to Zurich.

the pool in Baden:

tri club zurich:

http://www.tcz.ch/

also, http://www.asvz.ch/index.cfm

for university sports…no tri but running as it seems

don’t worry about being able to train, sports is a VERY important part of Swiss life, traditionally, more so than for ex in Germany…

also, most Swiss speak English, the younger ones anyway

let me know if you need any help with translations or so, can’t help much with tris, only got into those after moving to US;

also, air cargo is expensive, think about shipping, though that is risky for expensive stuff…I just took a couple of suitcases when I moved to the US a couple of years back to study there

I’ll write more later if I think of more stuff…enjoy, Zurich is a great city!!

did some more searching, there is triathlon at the university…

on http://www.asvz.ch/index.cfm

click on ‘sportangebot’ (engl.: sports offered) on the menu at left

then on ‘fitness und ausdauer’ (engl.: fitness and endurance’)

there you’ll find a link to triathlon, click, then click on ‘angebot’ (offer) at bottom of paragraph…takes you to a page with swimming links…then of course, cycling is extremely popular in CH…you’ll be just fine…

just below the link to ‘triathlon’ there is also a link called ‘velo’, the Swiss name for ‘bike’, ‘Rennvelo’ is road bike or road racing…

hope this helps

You’re going to have to give up triathlon and just ski and play badminton
.

I bought a triall3sports.com double hardcase and it has worked for me so far. It cost me about $450. It holds 2 bikes and 3 wheels (could never get that 4th to fit, although the company claims it does). The case usually costs ~$50 to fly with here in the US. Usually there is a standard bike fee when flying (2 for 1 with this double bike case). I’ve never tried to ship a bike using this monster box.

One reason I like it is there is minimal disassembly required. Gotta remove the wheels, pedals, seatpost, and depending on the stem length either the handlebars or the stem and handlebars. You dont have to mess with the crank.

Good luck!

When you fly international it is usually free for the bike if it is one of your alotted bags. The worlds for olympic distance are going to be there in the beginning of Sept., but you would have to be back here in July to qualify in KC. You are going to get so many chicks dude, I’m so jealous…

Strike the KC race thing, I forgot that you are Canadian, check your schedule for qualifyiers there in Canada…

And if you don’t speak german, don’t worry, the Swiss don’t speak german either (heheeh…sorry for the cheap shot)…

Hi Sean

As you correctly noticed trisuisse is the national Triathlon federation, best join one of the many clubs (you can join directly, but there are a number of downsides to that). Baden has one, Zürich a couple (http://www.trisuisse.ch/hq/clubs.pdf). That will solve the pool problem, otherwise there’s 25m pools all other the place and a very nice 50m pool in Oerlikon and in summer naturally the lake.

English is not a problem, I would guess that 80% of the population speaks at least a bit of it.

I just moved from Wettingen (which is adjacent to Baden) a bit nearer to Zürich (roughly 15km from the city center now), if I can be of any assistance just ask.

Simon

PS: will you be working at the university or the ETH?

:) very true

but I didn’t want to scare him either

You shouldn’t believe everything Florian tells you :stuck_out_tongue:

Simon

Ich glaube das Florian richtig ist
.

But the Germans don’t speak German either (my girlfriend is from the Dresden area).

We’ll discuss this with Flo when he has a reasonable Internet connection again :-).

Simon

Last time I talked to him he was saying the only reasonable thing to do where he is is to commit suicide…
you think we will ever talk to him again??

Sure, he just flooded the bathroom in his new flat, and I don’t think it was a suicide attempt

Simon

Wow, thank you everyone for all the great advice, now can you comment on my bike fit? just kidding…

Good to know that switzerland is just as cheap to fly to. I wasn’t looking forward to a multiple connections trip. An 8+ hour flight is hard enough. Funny thing is, I will be bringing my girlfriend for a few months, and she’s never stepped foot on a plane before. I hope she survives!

Excellent to hear about the bike case fitting two bikes, never really considered that.

AG Worlds… That would be great if I could actually qualify. I’ve only been a tri-geek for a little over a year, and finished one very slow season. I plan on training a significant amount during my year in Switzerland, leaving time to travel of course.

Thanks for the information on Pools and specific tri clubs!

I will be working at the ETH.

I’ll probably bump this thread in a few weeks, once I know more about my journey, and have fully taken in all your guys’ advice.

Be very wary of the double bike case. The international carriers are more and more careful to enforce the weight limit on baggage, and double bike cases are very difficult to make weight with.

A bunch of my friends flew to GB for Masters track worlds, and this was definitely an issue…

Weigh it out before you purchase a double carrier you cannot use!

I wouldn’t be that sure…have you ever seen him swim?

I wouldn’t be that sure…have you ever seen him swim?

Actually I haven’t (since he’s always been ill/injured/etc when we’ve met), but isn’t swimming supposed to be his strength?

But we are now getting very OT.

Simon

Some good pointers here already. I would really avoid flying to Milan though. That would be a big pain in the @ss.

You’ll enjoy Zurich (uh, yeah, I should probably say that I live here), it’s a great city and Switzerland is a really nice place to live. If I were you I’d try and live somewhere near the ETH - much better than Baden IMHO. Let me guess, are your friends working for ABB/Alstom?.

RE buying a bike here - that will be a negative. It’s plenty expensive, you want to buy that over there.

As for races, there are plenty of OLY/sprint tri’s in/around Zurich so you’ll have no trouble filling your race calender. I would sign up for the Zurich triathlon for sure (early July) as it’s right in town and super easy to get to.

If you need to know specifics you can always PM me.

Here are some pics from todays MTB ride. Give you an idea of the area around Zurich.
