Moving to Madison, WI

My wife and I have made the decision to move to Madison, WI from our current home in downtown Mpls, MN. Planning to make the move before the end of the year.

We’re looking for any information people can provide with respect to jobs, areas to live, triathlon clubs, etc.

A quick search here gave me information on Epic Systems as a potential employer…are there any other companies worth considering, etc.?

We’re somewhat familiar with the area (originally from the Chicago area), but any information people can provide would be great.

Thanks all!

First things first. In order to fit in you must (Yes, “must” is the correct word):

  1. Get some hemp clothing (those hemp peasant skirts are everywhere)
  2. Get a John Kerry bumper sticker for your car (you will have to upgrade shortly)
  3. Get an Al Gore sticker for your car. But, don’t cover it with the above stickers.
  4. Get a beater bike. Madison is very, very, very bike friendly. The thieves know it.
  5. Get ready to hear some of the strangest political comments in your life.
  6. Buy a gun before you move there. There is no firearms sales in the city (even ammo is not sold). Another thing the bad guys know.

As for jobs, etc. What field are you in or looking to be in. I don’t live in Madison, but have many relatives and business contacts. Madison, if you can stand the strange politics, is a great place to live and work. Heck, any city where public intoxication is not against the law is interesting.

LMAO to the previous post. I’ve lived there as well, and have since moved to the east coast. I love WISCONSIN !!

Hemp for sure. You will become a cheese lover. Bong pipes… (gaaange) will be a common scent in the air. Hippies, Hemp, Tie Dye, Jesus sandals, Dreadlocks… etc… all over the place  Home sweet home baby !

What is your line of work?

Funny…yeah, I’ve noticed the above.

I’m currently working as a Business Analyst for a mutual fund. My background is mostly Analyst work, with some Project Management experience. I’d be interested to stay within the financial services industry, but don’t want to limit myself either.

I’ve recently completed my MBA, so am open to new opportunities at this point.

PM sent.

We moved to the Twin Cities FROM Madison about 5 years ago… were I to move back there, I would definitely want to live near like the Monroe Street or Vilas park area–those houses tend to be older more full of character and charm and are close to trails, the Arb, and shops and campus.

Just out of curiosity, why the move?

The draw to be closer to family.

We absolutely love Minneapolis, and would stay here forever if our families lived here…but it’s not a perfect world.

Bump for the evening crowd!

I LOVE Madison.

I hope you don’t like ice cream. If you do, prepare to get fat. The University makes the best ice cream in the world. They milk the cows on site and make the ice cream the same day. Get a nice big cone at the Memorial Union on a summer night and watch a band on the patio with Lake Mendota as a backdrop.

sniff I miss Wisconsin

I live in Madison and work at Epic so I can answer questions specific to that. I’m 25 with no kids and no wife so if you’re interested in schools or the house market I can’t really help you there. I live on the near west side and really like it because it gives me many running options out my front door - be it around the lakes, numerous bike trails, or the arboretum. It’s also easy to pick up Seminole highway on the bike and take it to Whalen, which puts you on the IM course. I’m originally from near Philly and I love Madison. I just wish i could pick it up and stick somewhere closer to home.

Post of the year man! Once you cross the “Cheddar Curtain” you just dont know what to expect. I did spit in the face of a woman in Newark Wi a day ago…damn she was a bitch. (another bike story).
