Moving to Louisville-Triathlon tips?

OK…I have a request for the group: My oldest brother is considering a move to Louisville…long story. I’m trying to help provide him with a “good reason” to go and also give him any/good information on local tri-clubs, running clubs etc…

Can anyone give me general “musts” for Louisville? If you have a website or local stores, clubs etc…I’d appreciate it.

Basically, I want to provide him information that will give him an opportunity to meet people w/ like interests and also give him things to research before going so he can hit the ground “running.”

Any thoughts/insights would be appreciated. Thanks

I only lived in LouKY for a little over a year (and did not particularly like it but that’s besides the point here). He ought to check out the Mary T Maugher Aquatics Center. A tri group is meeting there a couple of mornings a week. Running is great in Seneca Park, Cherokee Park, Iroquois Park. Good cycling opportunities in Southern Indiana - a short drive crossing the Ohio river and you will have the back roads (incl hills) of Clark county to yourself. There are also ample cycling opportunities available South of the Ohio River.

Quite a number of the local triathletes are somehow associated with TNT Louisville (maybe that’s not his cup of tea, I am aware of the controversy) - as coaches, former coaches or knowledgeable resources for the KY chapter.

Local races are the Louisville stop of the Tri America series, a sprint tri at Tom Sawyer Park (also a good training location), a sprint in Oldham county and quite a number of other races in reasonable driving distance. Lots of running events in LouKY in the first couple of months of the year: the Triple Crown in running and the Half / Full Marathon just before the Derby.

The general consensus about the city is that it is a great place to be as / raise a family. According to my own experience, ambitious career opportunities are limited and the crowd is rather home-town-bred. If you did not got to high school in the city many conversations stop right there - since you are from out of town, you understand? However, that might be different once you are in a family-focused mode…

Let me know if I can provide any add’l information.

Christina

Thanks a ton. I appreciate the insights and honesty. All things that are better to know sooner than later. It’ll be interesting to see how it works out for him, but this information will prove useful as he figits and has anxiety over it.

Thanks

I am in Louisville now, and actually I think got to see Christina this weekend in Memphis. Louisville isn’t a bad place to be a triathlete. Great park system for running and shorter recovery bikes. Local club is the Louisville Landsharks, and ride every Wed night I believe. Alot of the guys I train with don’t use the club though. If you want to talk to someone, email me at pts7@bellsouth.net, and I can fill you in a little better.

Didn’t know you were hanging out here, too  - Now, I don’t feel too guilty goofing off at work…

And, teambz, bluemonkeytri is THE person to talk to …and he already knew that in general (certain folks excluded, of course!!!) I didn’t like LouKY too much…
