Moving to DA - 10speed

OK mechanically inclined…

I want to move my tri-bike to DA-10 speed (so i can use the same wheels as my road bike) and I think all I’ll need to do is:

  1. put a on a 10-speed cassette

  2. get a DA 10-speed chain

  3. switch the aero extension shifter to friction (is there an indexed 10-speed version??)

  4. ride…

The one quesiton I have is do i need to get new front chainrings or will the ones I use for 9-speed still work?

A bit more information - I already have a new DA rear deraileur on and have been using it as 9-speed, I have FSA cranks with FSA rings.

in addition, you will need some kind of 10-spd shifters if you want indexing.

you will also need a “10-spd” front deraill. if you want optimal front shifting (does better on manipulating narrower 10-spd chain).

your existing chainrings should work fine.

Do you need a special Shimano 10 hub/carrier or will the standard 9-speed carriers accommodate a 10 speed cassette?

The hub cassette body is the same. I have been switching cassettes as i switch wheels this year and it’s a bit of a pain so I’d like to just have my race wheels set up with DA-10.

I use an old Ultegra 7sp front derailleur for my DA10sp setup, and haven’t had any problems. But I don’t shift often in the front, since my 42 with 11x23 rear gives me 0-35mph at 100rpm just fine.
I would however highly recommend getting new indexing shifters, I think you’ll find otherwise that friction shifting just plain sucks.
