Moving (1)

Sucks. I’m at the end of day three and I still have crap to clear out of the house I am vacating. Good lord, I’ve only been here for three years and it is amazing how much “stuff” I have accumulated. I’m not a pack rat, nor do I collect anything. It seems like the stuff is is never ending though. I’m tired. I moved my beds into my new place two days ago so this will be night two on the couch which I still need to move yet it’s super heavy and I have no idea of what I’m going to to with it tomorrow. Maybe the sofa fairy will come in the morning.

Regarding selling my home; have many of you out there heard that if you bury a statue of St. Joseph upside down in the back yard he will help you sell your home? My house was on the market for about 5 weeks, with lots of lookers but no buyers. I buried SJ, and had an offer less than 24 hours later! I encourage anyone who is trying to sell to try it.

QRgirl, good luck with wrapping up your move. I can sympathize… I’m just starting to pack for a move on Thursday… third move in three years… ugh. Hopefully the last move for the next three.

Do you really think SJ worked? I’m willing to try anything. I’ve had my house on the market since April and haven’t even had much luck with showing it. I’m willing to try anything. I was very spoiled though… my first house sold in less than 24 hours, my second in 2 days.

Hope the moving fairy visits you tonight. Or better yet, a hoard of strong, energized STers… I think hefting heaving couches counts as crosstraining

I have been here for 15 years and I am considering moving. I have started the stuff disposal process. Absolutely unbelievable.

This will take a year or more before I can even consider trying to sell the place.

Good thing that we get trash collected twice a week here.

If you are hoping for that sofa fairy, I suggest unburying St. Joseph and cleaning him off. Connections are the best resource.

I collect vintage electronics. I have a whole basement full of the stuff. I can’t imagine trying to move – it’s depressing. I thought I had it bad, my best friend collects printing presses (the sort that are several tons, and may fill a small room). I can’t imagine him ever moving.

Having just spend ~10hours straight each of the past two days moving large stuff (and we’ve been moving stuff out of our house for several months!), I can commiserate. Took me 3.5 hours on Saturday just taking apart the wooden swingset that we, for some reason, are taking to the new house. Took apart the pool table (even a 3 piece slate weighs a TON) which, of course, was in the basement. Took apart the entertainment center. Moved three couches (one from the basement) and the dining room set. Two trips with a full 17’ U-Haul that stank, had lousy brakes, and no working radio. Then a monsoon came in while unloading the first load, so had to squeegee the water out for the second run. And I’m taking much of today off to move more stuff using my father-in-law’s minivan.

My hands hurt so much.

And all this not even knowing if the house closing will actually happen. Our buyer is supposed to be closing on his house tomorrow(?), but haven’t gotten the remedy list from their inspection of last Tuesday. We’ve already addressed the stuff in our house they wanted, they’ve gotten their survey of our house done, they’ve got their mortgage ready, and who knows what’s gonna happen.

Once the home is sold, you are supposed to dig up SJ and take him to your new house.

it never fails to amaze me the “strange” things people accumulate; of course, i’m in no position to judge anyone, as i have gobs and gobs of mohair and other yarns. so much i don’t even have space for it.

I’M A CLOSET YARN HARLOT.

QRgirl,

Wonderful news about the house selling! That sounds like a great thing that it was only on the market for 5 weeks. From some of the stories I have heard lately that is a really short time. Congratulations on that. As for the couch, well good luck. If I was closer I’d give you a hand with it (easy thing to say from Michigan!).

My wife and I are living in our 4th home (1 rental and 3 owned). This will be our last. I though our last place was going to be it, but somehow my wife talked me into buying 3 acres and building a house. I don’t regret it, but it certainly hasn’t been as easy as it was on paper. I have done some remodelling at our other homes and I always thought that having to work around other people’s mistakes was difficult. I always thought that if you could just start from “fresh” that would be the easy way. Well it is easy right up until the time you are staring at a “blank canvass.”

Good luck with the new place.

Yes, he is still in the yard as the sale has not recorded yet. Once it is officallyofficial, I will dig him up and have him start his next mission. My friend’s mom has her house on the market too so I will go bury him there.

I cracked up when I went to the bible bookstore to get him. I told the lady “I need a statue of St. Joseph.”
She asked, “Do you want the home seller’s kit?”
Me, “Um, yes, I guess I do!”

My ex-husband’s ex-wife told me to do the same thing… I’ll try it when I need to move  Until then, I’ll trust that the universe hasn’t prepared a place for me yet

I got rid of a tom of stuff when I moved to SF. Its really not feasible to drag much across the ocean. But since then I’ve bought new stuff so it would suck to have to move again.

My mother in law is a pack rat extrordinar. We purchased her property which had a chicken coup on it. One day we decided the coup was an eye soar and it needed to come down. After a little investigation we realized nearly the entire thing was filled floor to ceiling with newspapers…she never threw one away. She’d lived there for 25+ years and never threw a newspaper away. It took a long time to get rid of the damn things before we could take the coup down.

ugh yarn. I have room full of yarn, yarn in the garage, plus the 4 projects I am working on now.

Wow, this in unbelievable. I did the same thing about 3 years ago when selling my house. My sister did the same thing. We tell everybody who’s having trouble selling their house to do that…I thought we were the only ones who knew about that…funny!

P.D. It really works!

So I am reading this thread congratulating myself on the fact that I try really hard to get rid of stuff then I get to your post and realize I am just as bad as everyone else. I have yarn everywhere, drawers of yarn, boxes of yarn, bags of yarn. Really good yarn, soft, beautiful, gorgeous yarn. Yarn coming out my ears…

Of course I never have time to knit much and when I do I have to go buy new yarn.

Maybe once my garden shed is finished I can fill it with yarn too…
