Movie Review - Ne le dis à personne - Tell No One

I dont know if this movie has been released in the US as of yet.

The movie is based upon a novel by Harlen Coben (happy to reccomend most of his books as over night reads, not exactly David Foster Wallace) and tells the story of the murder and disappearance of a Doctors wife.

Essentially unsurprisingly the Doctor is the number 1 suspect although he was never found guilty of the crime, 8 years after the crime was commited he receives an email that sets of a chain of events that make him a firm suspect in the minds of the police.

For a very brief moment in the movie I felt that it fell in to the trap of making the police appear incompetent but this was quickly resolved, and it maintained the quality of the dialogue throughout.

The ending of the movie differs from that of the book but works extremely well and the acting from all the participants is fantastic. I wish I spoke French as well as Kristin Scott Thomas, for that matter I wish I spoke English as well as her.

The suspense is maintained throughout, the plot is gripping, the light hearted moments funny and the sense of violence palpable where it was appropriate. This is an intelligent movie and whilst an awful lot of things happen in a short period of time towards the end of the movie the sense of pace was excellent and it is a thoroughly enjoyable couple of hours.

This is the second french movie, the last being 36, that I have seen recently and to be honest I think that this French Thriller is a better example of the American Thriller Genre than anything that has been produced in the US in recent years.

An early review of this I read in the UK is that the French make better American Thrillers than the Americans and I think that this movie is certainly a very good example of the Genre.

thanks so much for the review, the movie sounds fantastic. we will keep our eyes out; hopefully it arrives to my city soon.

How could an email sent to HIM, 8 years after the crime was committed, make him a firm suspect in the minds of the police?

  • *I could explain that for you, tell you the plot and who did it, suffice to say he receives an email, was a suspect before and becomes a suspect again.

Why not watch the movie, I accept that particular bit does not appear to make sense.

Because I would wonder about the answer to this question and I fear the movie would fail to address it and it would piss me off.

Plus it is French, that is enough for me to avoid it.

LOL–then don’t see Cache; that will really piss you off!

(it ruined an entire afternoon for my husband; it was just TOO french…mysterious, artistic, and absolutely frustrating.)

When the crime was commited the guy was suspect number one.

8 years later he receives an email, a chain of events start again and he becomes the number suspect again.

It is not “French” in a “arty, mysterious, non-sensical” way, its simply a good thriller done in French.
