Mountaineer Tri -Morgantown, WV

Hey ST’ers!

Heading East to do the Mountaineer Olympic in WV. Does anyone have info on the course? The website is vague but I hear it is pretty challenging with many climbs? Thinking about leaving the TT bike in the garage.

The more info the better. Thanks for any tips on this race.

I’ll be there too. Elevation map on the website doesn’t look too bad, but then I’m used to the tri-bike in constant hills. From what I’ve heard from people that did it last year they made the bike course easier this year.

Good luck.

Looking forward to reading your race reports, as I’m thinking of doing the 1/2 next year.

I just talked to my buddy that lives there an does the race every year. Since he is a local he is a hill climber and he was disappointed that they removed the monster suffering climb. He said last year bring your road bike. This year a tri-bike will be fine. It will be a nice event and the weather looks perfect 70’s. See you there we will be pounding beers at the sunset on cheat lake the night before if you are bored.

I am from nearby to Morgantown and rode the new bike course last week. It is alot less severe than previous years and on some smoother roads. Though the out-part of the bike course has some holes and rough spots. Coming back into town there are also some rough spots…make sure your bars are tight! All in all a nice bike course. After all…there are NO flat spots in West Virginia!

I have not run the new run course but it involves more of the trail system around Mo’town plus some good hills thrown in.

Water was WARM last week also but haven’t heard how warm. Travel safe!

Thanks for the update! I am looking forward to the race. I always travel with my wife and we make a nice long weekend out of our trip. Anything worth checking out between Charleston and Morgantown?

Thanks for all the advice on Mountaineer. It was a great weekend and a wonderful course! Weather was perfect. Only beef was that the bike course was very narrow in places and the beginning and end were very bumpy. I will definitely do it again. The run for us International folks was not a 10k. It was obviously 6.6 miles (1/2 the 13.1 course).

Friendly people and a good set up. The transition area parking garage worked really well and gave you some nice shade.

I agree with the bike course. The first/last two miles need to be paved or avoided. I lost both of my aerobar pads along the way!!

Tougher run than I envisioned, that 8th street hill was a bitch!

I did the International also yesterday and really enjoyed myself. Since getting my lunch handed to me in St. Croix, I needed a good rebound.

Perfect weather and having to look at Heather Gollnick, Amanda Lovato and the other beauties made for a great day.

Thanks for the chat on the run! It was nice meeting you along the way. Best of luck in IMLP! If you are ever in KY give me a shout and I’ll take you out for a challenging bike ride and a cold beer.
