So, who else is going and which race are you doing?
I’ll be doing the sprint. I figure I should do OK since the increase in altitude for me is only 2000 ft and for most it’ll be more like 5000ft. That makes a BIG difference. it’ll be my first race this year with a wetsuit. I’m gonna freeze my a** off. The local outdoor pool is registering about 90 right now. Water temp at the sight is about 71.
Great race, great venue, just remember to bring your 3rd lung. Swimming at 7k ft, and then going up from there is awesome…I’ve done the race a few times, and always a challenge, and a good AG field…DOn’t remember that the water was ever that cold though, just wetsuit legal by pro standards usually…
my fiance and I are doing it. her family has a place near the start, so we can spend the entire weekend up there.
Beware – The Eddie Factor–
Last year at this race he ran out of water at the first run stop while the spring was going on. That meant the Oly and 1/2 people had no water at the first run stop. Did I mention that it is also the last run stop? And that, I’m pretty sure the 1/2 goes through this stop four times (I think it’s a 2 loop run).
No support on the bike portion of the 1/2, so bring your own nutrition and liquids.
Not a bad race or race director, but there seems to be an issue with liquids at a lot of races he puts on.
I’ll be there with the Inland Inferno Club as well. I’ll be doing the Olympic since I am just getting some fitness back from having a plate put on my left Clavicle.
Look for us in the big white Incycle van.
…not doing it this year…but have done the race …3 times I think…
The Eddie factor – he always puts on a well run race…organized …starts on time, etc…but something is almost always off a bit – the distances at some locations (not an issue at this one)…the H2O last year (it was hotter than expected), etc…
…so plan on something being a bit off…in an otherwise well run race…
swimming at 7000 ft is a trip for us low-landers…you’ll be a bit out of it getting out of the lake…so be careful getting on the bike…
water temp never too bad – usually colder standing around first thing in the am…lake will be fine … some do it without wetsuit…I’ve used a sleeveless…
Oly bike - the way out is a general climb…with a big climb around mile 8 as I recall…the way back is FAST…even a slow weak cyclist like me breaks 40mph coming back down the hill
Oly run – there is one BIG up hill…approx mile 2 to 3 on the way out…it is steep and it sucks…esp at 7000 fet…the positive is that you can abaolutely fly coming back down…
So that’s my input…I’m actually bummed I’m not doing the race this year…I’ll be in Chicago getting drunk at a Cubs game…I set my PR for an Oly at this race (a pitifully slow time for almost everyon on this forum…but a PR for me.)…I’m actually going up to ride 2 laps of the course this weekend…I will re-define slow on the second climb…
I’m trying to arrange my schedule to fit this race in. I’m thinking of doing Taylor House ride the day before like last time I did this race. great way to get in a long ride the day before the race.
I’d love to join you for that ride my my old body always rests 2 days before any race. Today was my last workout before Sundays race in Chino Valley. Although the weather is supposed to be nice tomorrow so I may take the race machine out for a spin tomorrow just for fun : )
I juat entered so PM me as we get closer and I’ll know if I’m doing Taylor house or not. Might stay here and go to masters practice Sat morning after running and riding.
I was looking to do the Mtn Man oly after the oly at Las Vegas, NM got cancelled. A business trip has just come up, though, which will make me miss it. Anyone know other good olys in the Southwest?

I’m in for the half…the elevation will make it a challenge. I have raced quite a few Mountain Man events, never this one before, and never had a issue with nutrition/hydration.
Great race, love the challenge of the altitude and the hill. One of the prettiest race courses I can think of. Right up there with Lk Tahoe Marathon for scenery (and altitude!).
I have never had a water problem or any other significant race organization problem at Mtn Man, I have done the Oly twice and the HIM last year. And - I’m at the back of the pack (finish line banner was down when I ran in last year). I think they put on a great race. I love the venue, even “the hill”.
Still recovering from a nasty open double fracture after being hit by a truck in Feb., so I will stay in lovely Scottsdale much to my dismay. But I will be back in 08. AND I will not walk on the run… Good luck everyone…enjoy a good race and go to Beaver St Brewery afterwards…
