Mountain bike bars to S bends?

Obviously I don’t own a mountain bike if I’m asking this. There’s been a few posts here mentioning that you can make S bend clip-ons using mountain bike bars. I’d like to try out a set of S bars but the $195 for the Hed clip-ons seems a bit out of line for an experiment.

Could anybody please explain this concept to me. Thanks in advance.

First, what are your current aero bars?

I just purchased the Vision Tech clip-ons/base bar for the P2K and have Syntace C2’s and Profile Jammer GT’s for the road bike, but I’ve got a set of Profile Aeorolites laying around that used to be on the P2K. It seems to me if I could remove the adjustable regular end piece in the Aerolites it could be replaced with something with an S bend. Of course it would have to be the same diameter, which I haven’t measured yet.

The syatace and visions are out. The Jammer GT’s work great. Just get a straight mt bar and cut it in half. You now have two straight extensions.

Profiles need a riser bar. Again, just cut it in half. Bring the profiles to a shop and check a few out. There are different levels of rise so you will have to try a few out to see that they work. Ask in the shop for used stuff or swap outs. You may find a cheap ass bar just to try it out. If you like it, you can go for a nicer bar that is lighter, even something carbon.

Generally, the diameter of the ends of the bars will match up. The center of the bar where the stem would clamp will give you a bit of a problem, but most will be just fine. Be careful that you dont over tighten the clamps and crimp the bar.

I have the Profile carbon strikes and I used an old Icon bar for the extension.

Good luck.

I was going to the MTB thing for my Carbon Xs, but my “research” determined that the inner diameter of every carbon riser bar I found was smaller than needed to fit bar end shifters. Therefore, aluminum was the only option and I couldn’t bare putting any aluminum on a bike that I spent 1 year getting to all carbon component. Lame excuse, I know.

So, I decided to wait until either Profile releases their S bends or you can buy Hed extensions. (Tom had some)

But last week, I changed my might and will be swapping out the whole thing for some Hed integrated b/c I need a higher hood placement while keeping my aero position. I’m going tomorrow to pick em up, I hope…

“The Jammer GT’s work great. Just get a straight mt bar and cut it in half. You now have two straight extensions.”

Will that only give me a strait bar? I’m actually looking for an S bend as with the Heds.

Riser bars give the S-bend. Be carefull, as the inner diameter could cause problems with your barcons.

I’m in midst of the same project, my fun and self education for the winter.

I haven’t settled on a base bar. Prettty much narrowed it to the VT base bar or a syntace.

Sounds like you have the basic VT alloy base bar. I can’t find info on the diam and length of the middle secition where the stem and aero extension clamps would attach. Do you know?

Beyond the base bar my set up will be dif from what you describe as I’m determined to have the aero extensions mounted below the base bar, and generally have mucho adjustability in terms of pad height and width, aero extnsn length, and height of the whole front end.

It says right on mine - diameter is 26.0(also available in the larger size) and the center part is 420mm. I believe they come in 40, 42 and 44 cm lengths.

I think we’re talking about dif base bars??

I’m seeking the length of just the round middle section of this bar, which certainly can’t be 42 cm (420mm). The whole thing is 42com wide.

Duh. My bad. I read it without thinking. I just measured it - 12 cm.

Sorry for the gaff.

CG.

Thanks CG!

Many sellers and even VT have failed to reply to me on that question, for whatever reason.

A big bellowing you-da-man to you.
