The weather is finally warm, the sun is out, I’m signed up for all my races this year and I still can’t get motivated. I have never had this much trouble getting back into training. Anyone else still in a slump?
maybe you have gotten yourself into too much obligation. perhaps you need something new. I don’t know, but I’ve been there, only to come out of it realizing that I obliged myself to too much distance, or something that I really didn’t want to do.
take a breath. step back, do something different for this week. if you don’t feel differently by the end of next week my advice is to re-evaluate your race schedule to examine if it is really what you want to be doing for the upcoming season. who knows…maybe your true desire is something else (or it could be exactly what you’ve planned on doing)
the reality is that everyone hits a slump. now go get outside, dig in the yard, get a cold beer and fire up that grill!

It’s called training but it’s supposed to be fun. If you don’t enjoy the training, maybe you’re in the wrong hobby. Go find something else to do and come back to triathlon when you miss the training and can’t wait to get out.
kitty is right. take a few days off, play some racketball, golf, tennis, skeet shooting, poker etc. catch up on some stuff around the house. eat lots of crappy food. enjoy yourself and wait for the “eye of the tiger” to come back.
happens all the time to folks - once to me. sounds like you need a break. go paint the house and shoot some hoops - learn french, down some beers or sleep late for two weeks. if you’re still not into it take the season off. im an all of nothing person and if i am not 100% into it i just bail. good luck. tristan
what about people that have already had lots of time off and still are having a hard time getting back into killer instinct mode? Got sick ages ago (Dec to be more precise) and though I am on again off again sick I still can’t seem to get the fires restoked. After 20yrs doing this I’m having a hell of a time trying to find the drive again (not that I’ve ever been really competitive anyway). What makes you guys tick?
I was feeling pretty low during the winter and couldn’t get motivated so i entered a marathon in May. Now that i have other things that seem likely to be more fun i have decided not to do the mrathon.
Just taking the pressure off has made me much more motivated to train for the things i really want to do.
The marathon was something i entered as i felt i should, now i realise it is better just to do the events that you want to do, be honest about what you want to do this year, don’t do stuff you don’t want to!
How many years have you been doing tri’s?
Five years. The events I am enrolled in are only a few (hard to get time off work).
I’m in my fifth year also and went through the same thing you are. I took off almost the whole winter and went skiing. it was just the break I needed. Don’t sweat it, train, don’t train, the motivation will come back. This damn sport is addicting. It’s like the mob; every time you try to get out…they pull you back in!!!
