The finish of the Men’s race in Beijing was the most excited I’ve ever been watching a triathlon. There was an aid station about 600m from the finish line of the multi-loop course and the 3 leaders (Gomex, Docherty, and Frodeno) had dropped Whitfield at the top of the climb. When the three of them got water at the aid station, they had about 1 minute left in the race and I yelled “What the hell are you doing!?!?!” at 3am with my girlfriend asleep next to me. Whitfield caught back on, and I read in his race report that when they slowed to get water he couldn’t believe it.
Also, the finish of the Men’s race in Sydney.
If Ironman had awesome moments/finishes they wouldn’t need to manufacture drama for the broadcast.
I think the sprint finish in Australia 1990 when Pauli Kiuru beat Ken Glah would be one of the greatest finishes. I think that´s the closest IM ever. I´ve seen pictures of it but didn´t find any googling.
One of my favorite finishes was the 1988’ish USTS Championship Hilton Head race between Mike Pigg and Mark Allen. Mark Allen was flying and gaining on Mike Pigg in the closing 1/4 mile. Pigg had to dig super deep to hold him off. Awesome stuff.
I remember seeing a picture with the Wisconsin Capitol building in the background and the two overall men winners diving towards the tape at the finish line. I think the picture was in a Ironman publication of previous year races, so probably 1990’s. Anyone know the year/names or so maybe a video can be found?
I’d have to go with the one where Dick and Ricky Hoyt cross the Hawaii finish line even after a bike malfunction. Brings tears to my eyes almost every time.
Before all these great ITU finishes, we had a close race or two ourselves…Just that most of them were not filmed like today, but here is a Tinley/Molina finish from the old USTS series…
My closest finish was just a few years ago at Strawberry Fields…Timing chip said it was 1/1000 sec…Glad someone did not have to call that one from an eyeball view…
Greatest moment has to be Julie Moss crawling across the Ironman finish, suprised they have not made a movie about that one yet…
