Morgantown, WV

Currently interviewing for a Federal position in Morgantown. Anyone familiar with the area? Curious what the tri/cycling scene looks like. Also, any insights into the housing situation and activities would be fantastic. Thanks.

I lived there for the last 7 years before I moved a couple months ago. If you have a minute, PM me with anything you want to know and I’ll answer it tonight (I’m currently on my phone and it’s a bit of a PITA to answer you using it). Where are you currently living and what kinds of stuff do you like to do?

I love the area. Did a weekend “training camp” with buddies there this past spring. The Morgantown road race (google ABRA racing) is a pretty sweet event- Jeremiah Bishop won it a couple years back. If you search “morgantown road race mapmyride” that will give you an idea of the riding in the area- alot of 0.5-3 mi climbs.

45 mins away is Philippi/ Menongehala national forest which has some longer climbs and is equally cool (Appalachia Visited road race).

Plenty of road races close enough to not need a hotel, not sure about tri.

Wamsley’s cycles bike shop was pretty helpful too, they are downtown Morgantown I think.

That sounds cool!!!

HFP puts on a nice triathlon in Morgantown. If you want flat, run the trail along the Mon on the river trail. The course they took us on was a bit hilly, but very enjoyable. I would think cycling would be good on the less traveled roads.

PM me if you want. I live just north of Morgantown and train with a lot of active triathletes in the area. Between my small town and Morgantown there are 15-20 active IM folks here.

Morgantown Multisport is a very active club(80 members) and supports training workouts several times a week depending on interest and level of training/racing you are doing. Very active cycling club and trail running club as well. We also have Cheat Lake to swim in which is 5 minutes north of downtown Morgantown.

From a racing standpoint there are a fair amount of sprints, Olys and the half, mentioned earlier by someone, within 45 minutes of Morgantown.
check out www.iplayoutside.com or www.runhigh.com for events. Iplayoutside covers WV, western md and SW Pa for the most part.

good luck and I am sure some other M’town locals will post.

NETL?

I’ve visited a handful of times and didn’t find much for running near my hotels. It seems like the type of area that should have some killer trails if you get out of town just a bit.

Hey there. Been living here for the past 11 years. Most folks covered the tri/bike scene well. We have a good rail-trail system along the river for flat running/cycling. Cooper Rock is about 15-20min out of town for some nice MTB/trail running (we had snow up there from Dec-Feb last year for XC skiing!). Plenty to do here if you like the outdoors.
Housing is another issue. It is a fairly transient area with WVU and other employers, so the housing market is busy and there is always something available. Not as high priced as your major metro areas, but pricey for WV. The town is one giant bottleneck too. Traffic can be a pain in the evenings, but once again if you are coming from a big city it may not seem to bad. PM me if you have any questions (schools, etc.).
