Putting on DA STIs. I know you guys don’t bother with reading directions anymore if you ever did, but I don’t want to screw this up.
So I am at the part where I am putting the cables on and is has a section about “Outer Stopper”, and installation of it (them), on the down tube. ANd they gave me these parts:
The thing at the top is the cable guide for the derailleur cables. If you have one under the bottom bracket you don’t need it. Most of them are brand/model specific. It’s worth hanging onto as a spare if it would fit on any of your bikes.
From the looks of the down tube of your bike you don’t need the barrel adjuster/stops that are in the center of your picture. The ones in the middle of the picture are made as replacements for the old style down tube shifters.
I can’t tell from the picture whether your cable stops have have the ability to use the barrel adjusters. It’s a nice feature since you can take up slack in the cables instead of making adjustments at the derailleur. If the cable stops can’t accommodate the screw in barrel adjusters one alternative would be to install cable tensioners on the cable housing between the down tube stop and the STI for the derailleur cables. If your the down tube stops are threaded for the barrel adjusters you can just unscrew them from the ones pictured. Don’t lose the spring when you undo them since it can pop out.
Sorry, but I can’t remember what the silver cylinder thing on the left side of the picture is for off the top of my head. It should be somewhere on the instructions but you most likely don’t need it.
looks like you are worrying too much about it all. The parts you have there basically sit on the cable guide on the down tube you pictured. if your cable stretches then what they enable you to do is rotate the screw part and this extends the screw out of the housing and thus tightens (or loosens) the cable for the gears. on the cannondale they install the barrel adjusters which look tike a piece id metal arround the cable. turn these when pedaling to hear the effect they have!!! so… as you have it set up I would put these parts on the shelf for your next bob jackson and run the bike as it is
As you have a Cannondale you do not need the bottom two parts (as shown by the picture of your bike)
…these two parts are to adjust the tension of the cable for the gears (this is the second place one would normally go to after adjusting the tension knob at the back of the gear derailleur) to get the chain to jump smoothly from one gear to another on the cassette at the back…
Cannondales normally come with two little barrel adjusters on the cables that come out the front of your handlebars…I’m sure you have them and have wondered what they’re for!!! they’re about an inch long and grooved.
That is Cannondale’s alternative to the two pieces you have at the bottom of the picture…it’s an excellent idea as it allows you to adjust a gear - if you know what you’re doing - if it goes out of wack during a race or whatever!
Now the top part is basically for cable routing under the bottom bracket area. Get your bike, turn it upside down and look at the cables and see how you probably have one already under the bottom bracket.
This all makes me sound like an expert but I learnet all this through many hours of traila and error I insisting I do things myself…
