More Wisconsin Swimming Problems

http://www.nbc15.com/home/headlines/53349887.html - Endurance House does a great training program and anyone in the program a this point has prepares for the IMMoo in 4 weeks. Still can have problems. Good to see fast response by boaters and city fire rescue

This honestly is beginning to get a little freaky. Does anyone know more about what happened??

As usual probably not swim related, 16 of us swam across Geneva Lake yesterday(7.5) miles, and we all made it. We are making these stories bigger than they really are. What if she was just out for a swim and it was never mentioned she was training for a Tri??? Would the story even matter to people(in the tri world)?? I hope she makes a full and speedy recovery and can someday swim again.

You guys swim with a escort boat?

That sounds like a fun challenge…

I was thinking the same thing. I might like to give that a shot next year.

I was curious so I did a quick google news search for “michigan drowning”. (I live in Michigan) There were news articles about 3 drowning deaths in Michigan this weekend. There may have been more, that’s just what shows up on Google this morning. Over 100 people a year drown in Michigan.

Water is dangerous and a decent percentage (small for sure but fairly regular) of people who hang out in or on water get into trouble and some of them die. That’s just the way it is.

The only think freaky about what appears to be a spate of triathlon water deaths and rescues is that triathletes are suprised by it. Yes - it is somewhat dangerous to do open water swimming. Put thousands and thousands of triathletes in the water over the course of a season and a very very small number won’t come back. Same with fishermen, boaters, kids at the beach etc.

Well, of the 4 tris I did this summer, there were deaths in 3. So, I am okay with saying it’s freaky. Not something I’ve experienced in the past and something I hope doesnt’ continue.

I swam it in 2007 for a “Concerns of Police Survivors” (C.O.P.S) fundraiser. The swim yesterday was a fundraiser for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. It was put on by Steele Whowell of Fontana, his family runs the Gordy’s restaurant, Cobalt dealership etc… We had great escorts, about 12-15 boats , one wave runner and (3) paddle boarders, plus the Water Safety patrol boats as well. We met at Gordy’s in Fontana then boated down to Big Foot Beach, jumped in at about 615am and swam back. There were some serious swimmers there, lets just say I was not in the front pack, middle pack… but I finished and raised some money. This was the inaugural swim for the foundation but he is going to do it again next year, but maybe a couple of weeks into September to cut down on the boat traffic. If you ever want to do it let me know, all we need is an escort boat and we are good to go, we don’t need any permits or anything along those lines. I know plenty of people who have boats and would be willing to escort us across.
