More on Dodd

Anyone know that his wife served on a board of an AIG company?

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/03/dodds_wife_a_former_director_o.html

I hear he is toast in his bid for re-election…I will believe it when I see it!

Me too. The sooner we get rid of some of these old, corrupt geezers the better.

So Dodd’s wife was paid $48,000 and change 5+ years ago from a subsidiary of a subsidiary of AIG, and not the evil Financial Services part of AIG. Essentially a stipend that a boardmember gets.

I’m no Dodd fan or apologist, but I file that under “not news.”

From the article:* IPC paid millions each year to other AIG-related companies for administrative and other services. Clegg was a diligent director. In 2003, the proxy statement report, she attended more than 75% of board and committee meetings. This while she served as the managing partner of Clegg International Consultants, LLC, which she created in 2001, the year she joined the board of IPC. (See Dodd’s public financial disclosure reports with the Senate from 2001-2004 here.)*

I am not one to defend Dodd, or most members of Congress for that matter. While I don’t agree that a spouse should hold such a position, in this case he disclosed her status and her salaries in his personal financial disclosure reports, as referenced in the article.
While his wife’s position on the board may have influenced his decisions, I think he is more influenced by the $9 Million he received from the Finance and Insurance industries from 1989-2008.
Dodd, Career Campaign Money received from various industries

As a reminder, he is currently head of the Senate Banking Committee.

You can find similar patterns for most politicians on both sides of the aisle.

I file that under conflict of interest.

reelection?!?!? WTF? That d-bag belongs in jail.

Echoes of Cheney-Haliburton… I’m digging for your posted complaints about his tangled web of conflicted interest and profiteering, can seem to find them. A little help, if you would?

In the 2000 Haliburton financial report, they reported revenues of $11B (Cheney left as President of the company in August of 1999 to run for VP with Bush).
The company was at still operating at a net loss in 2002 at $998 Million. Then Iraq happened. Between 2003-2004 revenues were up by $4B to $20B. In the 2004 financial statement they report income from Iraq and Kuwait at $7 Billion. They still reported a net loss in 2004 of $979 Million (Iraq had started in March of 2003).
But by 2005, they reported positive net income for the first time at $2.3 Billion. This included the first full year of the Iraq war.
But of course, **Cheney’s relationship with Haliburton had no bearing on his push for the Iraq war. **

I know Halliburton is the boogie man of the left, but Cheney divorced himself of any financial interest in Halliburton when he took the VP job.

Cheney (Sept. 14, 2003): I’ve severed all my ties with the company, gotten rid of all my financial interests. I have no financial interest in Halliburton of any kind and haven’t had now for over three years. And as vice president, I have absolutely no influence of, involvement of, knowledge of in any way, shape or form of contracts led by the Corps of Engineers or anybody else in the federal government.

He said it publicly so it must be true. After all, everything that politicians do is totally transparent to the American people

If my memory serves correctly, Halliburton got a TON of contracts from the government back during the Clinton years, too. They’re an equal-opportunity (and apolitical, except when it comes to worship of the almighty dollar) government contractor.

Before the Iraq war, Haliburton was #30 on the list of the top 100 defense contractors. It is now at about #6.

How much in dollars did they get? The fact they were still a defense contractor, though “only” top 30, tells me they were a government vendor then and they still are now. Besides, there were many things they were doing over there that they were the only company willing to go in and do, for much of the first several years of our time in the ME and SW Asia. Not a lot of companies, outside of those “security contractor” types, were all that willing to send their folks over to Eye-Rack and Afghanistan only to see them blown up by a roadside bomb, or hosed down at a security checkpoint.

how much did Cheney profit from Halliburton while in office?

edit: I’ll save you the effort of having to back up your tired statement: http://www.factcheck.org/kerry_ad_falsely_accuses_cheney_on_halliburton.html

Notwithstanding the emoticon, doesn’t that level of cynicism depress you?

No actually, it doesn’t. Your response is a good one and could be used for many of the posts here in the LR.

This definition pretty much sums up many of the conversations that take place here everyday.

“Social cynicism results from excessively high expectations concerning society, institutions and authorities. Unfulfilled expectations lead to disappointment, which releases feelings of disillusionment and betrayal.”

Either I don’t do satire well, or you don’t receive it well (maybe a larger smiley next time?). See Trail’s response to LT83, and LT83s follow-up. By Echoes of Cheney-Haliburton, I was referring to the appearance of conflicted interest to those who are inclined to see it where it doesn’t necessarily exist.

My actual issues with the former Veep have little to do with his business connections.

satire doesn’t show well when reading ST on a handheld…
