Moderately Attractive, Blonde, White Woman Victim = HEADLINE NEWS OF ENORMOUS IMPORTANCE

I’m speaking of course of Beverly Carter and Hannah Graham.

While sad, I’m not sure why these are massively important headlines news. Looks like local news, mostly. People are abducted and/or killed pretty much daily. ~35 homicides per day, nationally. But if it’s a blonde white woman OH MY GOD.

I think I’ll become the Sharpton of white women, and rush to holds news conferences on our need to protect attractive white women everywhere.

Isn’t this a story because it’s apparently a “Serial” situation? Same murderer killing at least two, possibly more?

We know it’s sad whenever anyone dies or gets injured…I have noticed that we as a society are becoming immune to feeling, probably as a result of being bombarded with piece after piece of negative news. We started a thread last week about the beheadings, and it became a would you care if the victim was xxxxxx religion. I am sure there is a scientist somewhere that can explain how our defense mechanisms kick in to protect us from negative news.

The story was already front page news before they had any identified suspect (at least publicly). But you’re right, it has kind of grown into an intriguing made-for-TV plot since then.

Not the same. It is a foreign born UVA coed who may have been murdered by a serial killer that doesn’t fit the white male between 28 and 35. It also happened in Charlottesville that for many years ranked in the #1 places to live and certainly the last place stuff like this is supposed to happen.

But I know what you mean, and that comes up all the time. People watch what they can relate to. The news media is in a never ending quest for ratings. The average white person, who makes up the majority of viewers and viewing potential cannot or doesn’t care to relate to a prostitute, or teenage runaway (who account for most disappearances) regardless of race. Most abductions are parents anyways, and people don’t find a father taking his children with no intent to harm as newsworthy.

Taking the words of our president. If I had a daughter, it would be Hannah Graham.

I’ve seen the same thing recently. This one was kidnapped this past weekend and has been the primetime story on all the local news stations.

So you’re not seeing enough of the Clooney wedding? Okay.

The first I heard of it was hear and I thought it was theforge posting and pointing out the fact that a bunch of people had gone missing from the area. I could be mistaken as I simply don’t follow this stuff but the little I have heard had been from the “Serial killer” aspect not the “Quite white chick” aspect.

That being said, yes, middle class white girl disappearing is news. Poor black kid, not so much.

I think it might be easy to say “This is racist”, but I think on many levels it more about “News”. If a suburban house wife gets shot in her house and killed, that’s news, because it doesn’t happen very often. If a poor urban black kid gets shot and killed that’s “Not news” because that happens 12 times a weekend in Chicago alone. I’m not familiar with the statistics for “Disappearances” by race but I’m not wondering if the same things isn’t taking place with that as well.

Middle class white girl traveling to Jamaca and disappearing is news. Young white girl being taken from her home is “News”. Don’t know, but I suspect that there may be more events on a more regular basis in poor and minority areas so they simply aren’t news.

And yes, to some degree people like to see pretty people on TV.

Yeah well, we have a serial arsonist roaming our town and we’re not headline news. Local yeah, but not like national.

This is usually the case with blonde white women who happen to be heterosexual. It is sickening to know the media perpetrates this shit yet will deny it. People of all races are abducted daily but when it happens to a attractive or semi-attractive blonde female, the story is headline news for over a week. Let it be a brunette or brown person, only local outlets talk about it for a day and a half. Males really get the short end of the stick when such situations are brought to the news.

It would also be considered racist to report all these murders. Certain people might conclude that specific race groups account for a disproportionate amount of crime.

No one disputes that.

So then who becomes the arbiter or what is/is not national news?

So then who becomes the arbiter or what is/is not national news?

I told you, I’m the arbiter. I am the champion of attractive white women everywhere. I’ll send you a like to my GoFundMe page soon.

More seriously, I wasn’t proposing a mechanism for fixing what I perceive as a bias, merely pointing out its existence.

We have market-based news. With that, you get the good, and the bad. Overall I think it’s preferable to when news was governed by a half dozen media magnates.

Except 6 Corps still own 90% of the media…

Except 6 Corps still own 90% of the media…

Yeah, but we have instantaneous, easy, and mostly free access to the other 10%, which is dramatically different than as little as 10 years ago. And that 90% is dramatically changing.

That has its good and bad effects, but I’d argue mostly good.

You might argue that “big media” can still control, whether intentionally or not, the predominant “mainstream” narrative surrounding an event. But that’s become more difficuilt, in my opinion, for a variety of reasons. And that’s good.
