Atlantan Kevin Moats is leading Floridian Joe Bonness by about 7 minutes at mile 17 on the run. I am sure everybody who knows Kevin will join in with me as I yell, “Go Joe, run that $^#%#*$^ down!”
Is moats 50-54? I can’t pullup my athlete finder right now so thanks for the update.
Yeah, him and Boness aged up this year. A doctor from MN is 4 minutes behind Bonness. I don’t think he has had this much competition before?
ouch!! but so true
Not that likeable, eh?
I have a feeling that in 5 years we will be talking about how tough the 55-59 age group has gotten.
Seems like there are some stud athletes who only get stronger with age!
you’d have to know him to understand GT’s comment. Kevin won the first triathlon I ever did back in 1984 and we had many battles head to head over the years that went both ways. I’ve seen good sides and bad sides to him, which is not uncommon for many people. I have a lot of respect for him though, one tough competitor.
He is one heck of a triathlete, without a doubt. No bones about that. I think he has finished as high as 11th at Hawaii. He is not well liked.
He was riding in Hawaii with his wife last year, when she flatted. He said, “I will see you back at the hotel,” and rode off. If was anybody he was not married to, he would not have even waved bye-bye.
which wife was that?
Wow–this guy brings out the UGLY in you guys! I like it.
I don’t think I even want to mention anything about that in print.
I can understand that. I hope he doesn’t read any of this, he’ll hate more then he already does.
hey are you the same “GT” that helped set up my Merlin at Roswell Bikes 8 years ago?
Yep. None of the full-time guys could figure out how to put such a large chainring on your bike.
He has no idea who I am, but I still don’t want to mention some stuff.
I had a buddy new into triathlon riding with a guy who knew Moats well. This guy said “Moats is an #$$hole. But wait, it gets better. I am probably his best friend.”
yeah, I remember that, that was funny them saying something like no one could race a chain ring that large. I have since downsized, I only ride a 57 now. Still racing that Merlin too.
There are so many Kevin stories. Did you ever hear the one about the flight to St. Criox a couple of years ago?
No. I heard about the Hawaii flight, but that gets into girlfriends.
He was winning the Athens Triathlon one year, about 200 meters ahead of Jon Appel, when he ran off course. Jon watched him, but did not say a word. After winning the race Jon said, “If it had been anybody else, I would have yelled.”
I used a 56 for a few years, and had to modify my GT TT bike to the front derailler to work. Now I just ride a regular road bike with a 53. I was going to put a 54 on it (with the 700s), like Bruce Buchanan used to run, but I changed my riding style a bit.
Damn! Moats held off Joe by 2 minutes. If not likeable, he is tough!
damn, 9:33 for Moats, that’s impressive.
Bruce is going to be pissed! He was the first to break 10 at age 50, and he did not want Moats doing that. That has to be a new AG record. I am sure Bonness Really wanted that.
Kevin Moats 01:05:32 04:56:49 03:24:28 09:33:06
Joe Bonness 01:07:53 04:58:32 03:22:46 09:35:23
Gregory Taylor 01:02:36 05:05:47 03:22:27 09:37:20
In the 50-54 age group! Tell me that isn’t amazing!
3 distinguished athletes who had 3 great races. Congratulations to all!
