How does this work? If a freshman is drafted in say the 18th round remains in school and becomes a strong prospect is he still linked to the team that drafted him 3 years ago? If he becomes a first rounder he will garner significantly more $$ at signing. At some point if he does not sign with original team does that team lose their rights to him?

Can be drafted out of HS if you don’t sign then you can be drafted as a junior and/or a senior.
There is a pool of money for bonuses. HS kids and juniors have the most leverage since they can go back to school. You only skip signing as a junior if you think you can move way up playing as a senior.
And yes, if the player doesn’t sign then the team that drafted him loses the rights to him. So guy drafted out of HS gets re-drafted as a JR or a guy drafted as a JR gets re-drafted as a SR if he doesn’t sign.

If you are going to be the top of the draft, and and getting 2-7MIl+ bonus. You are kind of silly going to school.
I would have no problem going to school if you are getting a smaller signing bonus. But if the decision is getting “never have to work money” vs. risking it on player development, not injury, maybe you arnt that good.
Rocker was selected in the 38th round of the draft. Likely given like a $1000 signing bonus. Partially because people thought he was going to school instead of signing for a $1000 bonus. Without the conerns about signing, he was prob at the 10-20g signing bonus. At that stage, school makes sense.
In like the last 5 years only a handful of first round picks havnt been signed. Most of the times was because they were not offered slot draft value because of injury.

Okay, okay, you guys are right, the first round part is a bit of hyperbole. I don’t think it would be smart to turn down a $million+ signing bonus down to chance injury etc at school, but lower levels, 100% for sure. You can always go back to college later in life(I’m actually getting my business degree next month at the age of 37). Being a kid playing ball in Idaho, although very good, I doubt I will have to worry about him getting million dollar bonuses out of HS, but who knows ;).
The main thing is that if you are a kid playing high level college it is going to be 100% better than playing in low minors.
There is also real value associated with college. They pay for your housing (will be nicer than low A ball), they pay for your meals (will be nicer than low A ball), they pay for facilities (will be nicer than low A ball), your travel will be nicer, etc. etc.
If you are a high school kid AND have the option of going to a legit program AND are not drafted in the top 10 rounds, it is prob best to go to school. If you cant make it out of school, you would prob not have made it in the minors anyway. This way at least you lived a better life for 4 years, and got a degree.
just like the decision to go pro if you are a top pick is a no brainier, the decision to go to college is a no brainier in 95+% of situations.
