Mizuno Wave Rider

I have been wearing these shoes for years. The Wave Rider 14 or 15 was changed to a lower heel, etc. - and I do not like them.
Does anyone know if they are going back to the “old” style?

I went from the 13 to the 14 a few weeks ago and I felt that the heel was higher on the 14 than the 13.

13 to 14 the midsole height was increased. The new 15 has reverted back to a similer profile of the 13… or so I’ve heard. I’ve never had a problem with any year of the Rider and I’ve gone through 12-15 pairs at least.

I’ve been wearing them from about 10-14 (haven’t tried 15 yet) and really don’t notice much difference in any of them. Some people don’t like the 14, not sure why. I’ve started to believe I have numb feet as I really can’t tell much difference in shoes, especially subtle changes like 2mm of change in drop for example. They do seem to wear out fast though…

I agree on the wearing out fast bit, but after trying a boatload of other shoes, my feet are happiest in them. I have the 14s (can’t remember the last # I ran in before I strayed) and have 2 new pairs in the closet as the last time I bought some they told me they were changing them again. They are a fugly colour though.

the new 15 apparently is more like the 13 after all the backlash with the 14. my 15’s arrive tomorrow. i love my 13s, just needed an update.

I’ve worn them since they were just the Wave Rider (no number). About 5 or 6 sets a year. The 14 was a departure from the previous in several ways. The 15 is back to feeling like the 12 and 13. As far as wear goes, I have always changed my shoes every 350 to 400 miles with no problems. Remember, the insides wear long before the outsides unless you are a foot dragging, heal striking animal.

Interesting…I’ve got about 200 miles in the 14’s. I don’t dislike them but they aren’t my favorite.

One other thing is that the front of my ankle bone rubs the top of the cut-out on the outside of the shoe, as if the cut-out isn’t as big as they were on the 13.

I was considering changing back to the Asics Cumulus on my next pair but now may give the Rider another chance since they have been cheaper for me.

Well, the did get rid of the split-eyelet on the lateral side of the shoe for the 15, which may change how that area feels on your ankle bone.

They also dropped the hell collar height by about 1mm, so the fit is kind of a hybrid between the 13 and the 14. The forefoot fits like the 14, but the rearfoot/heel area fits much closer to the 13. This current model reminds me of the Wave Rider 8/9.

Wave Rider 7s were still the best trainer ever.

I had read the issues about the 14 and switched to the Wave Musha 3. The shoe is much lighter and much less cushioning, but I’ve been running 60/40 ish between my Wave Rider 13 and the new one and happy so far. I will likely check out the 15 to replace my 13 and continue the mix. Glad to hear they made changes…and people love the old Wave Rider as much as I did.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah - it is like the 14 they lowered the heel somehow but left all the same. I have the same problem.
Glad to hear the old fit seems to be back. I will try the 15’s!

Has anyone else switched from the Wave Rider to the Wave Precision? I used the Rider for about 5 years then switched to the Precision and haven’t looked back. Love em.

what is better/different about the precision?

Lightweight, lower profile version of the rider. Here is a link to a youtube video, specifically discusses Rider/PRecision around the 5:50 mark.

I have been through 7 pairs of WR 13. I bought them up when I heard how bad the 14 was. I only have about 200 miles left in my 13s. So I will be ordering some 15s soon and hoping for the best.

I’ve run in the Precision for years and recently tried the Wave Rider 14 since my new race shoe is a Saucony Kinvara so I wanted something with more cushion for longer runs. So far I definitely prefer the Precision. The Wave Rider just seems to slow my turnover. I know weighs an oz or two more, but I just feel much slower vs. the Precision FWIW.

sorry if this is hi-jacking the thread, but my only running shoes are wave riders. my longest race has been a half marathon, but I plan on increasing my mileage a lot this year leading up to my first marathon in october. will i want to run the longer race in my wave riders or something else? alternatively, should i be running in a different shoe for shorter runs like 5k races?

I love the Mizuno 13’s and 14’s. They feel light on my feet and I feel fast in them. I run 5K’s often in them. Plan on running a Marathon in 2 weeks in them. Not a great trail shoe though due to the bottom having a spot where they always catch gumballs from local Sweetgum trees where i live.
