I train with Mizuno Riders and love them. I’m thinking about getting a pair of lighter shoes for racing (mainly 1/2IM and IM). Anybody out there with any experience with the Aero and the Revolver? Are they really different?
Ric,
I use my Rider’s for 2-3 long runs a week. I have run 1 1/2 marathon in the Aero’s and love them. The Revolvers are a little too flat for me and would not suggest using them for anything other than a 5k-10K. The shoe that I do my tempo, interval, and short hill runs in is the Phantom. It is essentially the same as the Aero but will withstand more miles. Rider-Phantom-Aero: Best combo I have found. My $0.02.
Thanks for your input; do you feel a noticeable difference between the Riders and the Aero?
the revolver is super light, more like a 5k racing shoe, if you like the Rider go with a (light to lighter), precision, phanton, aero. Most rider fans love the precision

I train in the rider and love them the percision is a good shoe but wasn’t as satisified as the rider. I have used the wave spacer for sprint to 1/2 IM without a problem. I’m 6’ 163lbs.
I train in the Wave Rider…I got 8 pair a few months ago…I race and do speed work in the Phantoms…I really like the Phantoms…they “ride” much the same as the Rider.
Do you go long (full IM) with the Phantom? What is your weight (I’m 154)? Thx
Yes I do…but I change them at 13.1 - seems that they run out of cushon after a bit. I have elastic laces and bada bing…new shoes one in less than a minute. Feels VERY good a 13.1
I used to ride on Wave Mavericks before they hosed the uppers so badly. On the Maverick 2 they narrowed the toe box, which gave me black toenails immediately. They also made the uppers lighter and the lowers heavier, which made them feel like lead weights on my feet. I switched to Wave Riders and have been very happy with over 200 miles on them so far and 2 races. I have been considering a set of lighter weight shoes for racing olympic up to marathon, but I’m not sure how a light shoe like the Phantom would hold up for that kind of distance. Does anyone have experience with longer distances and the lightweight Mizunos?
Yep I train and race em no problem but I’m not very big at weighing at around 134…changed over to em once I had the POSE method down pretty well and find they are great and feet feel fine in em even up to marathon distances.
Rhe wave spacer is very light and comfortable and have used them from sprint to 1/2 IM. as i said i’m 6’ 163 lbs

I have been running 125-165 km./wk. for the past nine weeks - with over 90% of that volume in racing flats. My favorite is the Wave Aero. Before I went to the Wave Aeros I had been training in the Wave Rider 7 and racing in the Wave Phantom, so I’m quite familiar with the Mizuno line.
I’ve had no problems with long runs of up to 35 km. in the hills in the Wave Phantoms, and plan on running a 50K event this Saturday in the Wave Aeros. That said, when talking about using a light shoe over a longer distance it’s more important to ponder whether the feet and legs will hold up than asking about the shoe. The reason is that most people aren’t running the same way in light shoes at a harder effort that they are running in heavier shoes in training, so there’s a disconnect there.
I used to feel that light racing flats weren’t helping me in races because my running style and pacing wasn’t suited to them. In other words, I’d end up forcing myself to run in a way that I hadn’t practiced much to suit the shoes, rather than choosing shoes to suit my running form. This led to tying up in races and excessive soreness in the calves. I always assumed it was the lack of cushioning or protection in the flats, but now I believe it’s running style and adaptation that are the key factors.
I’m completely adapted to low-heeled flats in training now, and in fact lat week when I tried wearing a pair of light trainers (NB 900) I had my worst run of the week as my calves and knees killed me. I felt completely shanked by the shoes, even though they are relatively light with a fairly low heel.
I can’t even run in the Wave Riders anymore. It’s all adaptation. If you want to wear a particular shoe in a race, make sure you adapt to it in training. I’m sure a solid shoe like the Wave Phantom will hold up just fine - it’s the legs that are in question.
I run everywhere, at all distances on all surfaces, in the Precision. I started with the Rider a couple years ago, and migrated to the Precision as my gait got more economical over time. I have a nuetral gait, with a slight tendency to under-pronate.
I just LOVE that shoe. If they ever stop making it, I’m screwed.
