What components can be mixed? I dont like Shimano brake/shifters, but I have some shimano drive train parts lying around. So can campy parts be mixed with Shimano?
I did a search and didnt find anything. which means maybe this is a ridiculous question.
You can possibly mix barcon or downtube shifters and rear mechs if you run your shifters as friction shifters. Though I haven’t run a front mech in aeons, I usually run my front mech in friction mode, anyhoo.
Friction shifting is hard for the neophyte. That’s how shifting was “back in my day”, and I actually like friction shifting better than indexed. That being said, I am probably VERY much in the minority here. I have a funny feeling that most on this forum would ask what the hell friction shifting is…
List your parts…I will let you know. As far as bar ends - Shimano on friction mode will run any rear der from 6 speed to 10 speed and wont care about brand. What are the others you have?
If you ask the people at the bike shops, they always say that you can’t mix them. I generally go along with what they say. I don’t really have a big prefernce either way.
I know a lot of people who violate the dogma, and have no trouble mixing components. There is probably a subtle benefit in using a shimanio cassette with a shimano derailler, but you can mix them, and they will work.
I have two bikes (one campy and one shimano) I want to “build” a trainer bike with an extra frame i got on the cheap. It has shimano shifters/brakes and BB/crankset. I have an loose campy rear der. and campy shifter/brakes installed on a different set of bars.
I would like to possibly switch the shifter/brakes and then use my campy rear der. and campy wheel. Possible?
I’d prefer to leave and use the ulegra BB/crankset and campy everything else.
Nine speed with co-mingle with out any issues. You can you ANY crank BB you want and the shifting system wont know. They dont want you to know it but you can use pretty much any 9sp with any…I have done it and have even raced IM with a DuraAce cogset on a Record bike. NO issues. Ten speed - that is another story.
if you like campy hoods and shimano everything else, J-Tek engineering makes a cable pull converter pulley. It works just like a problem solver canti to v-brake conversion pully, but mounts down by the derailleur like a rollamajig. Looks tacky, but works great. Also, consider the new SRAM group—looks good, works good, costs good, weighs good, and the levers are more campy-like than shimano.
Otherwise, drivetrain wise, most 10 spd stuff is reverse compatible. (i.e. you can use a campy/SRAM chain on a shimano drivetrain, ore a campy crank with DA everything else), you just can’t mix campy shifters with shimano rear derailleurs, or shimano shifters with campy rear and (probably) front derailleurs. However, shimano is designed to work with shimano and campy is designed to work with campy and SRAM is designed to work with SRAM, so there are some subtle mechanical “coincidences” that makes a pure drivetrain run great.
Can you mix Ultegra and Dura? I bought a new Front and Read Dura derailer, but still wanted to keep my ultegra shifters and gear set. Is that possible?
