Mixed Bag

The only restriction I care to impose is the 60 minute rule, and that we leave on time.

As I mentioned, I may be riding the prototype B2 Pursuit bike that I’ve been tooling around on, that’s got a fixed gear, one speed, aerobars, one brake, etc…

I’m not the UCI, there aren’t equipment rules provided you are comfortable in a group setting.

See you there, hopefully we can get this weekly or biweekly group lunch ride off the ground.

I guess I will have to start holding up liquor stores and banks pretty soon as those are damn fine wheels but I would bet we are talking the long side of five grand for a set.

Ahh but what price do we pay for free speed and faster splits?

Mavic’s iO is nearly universally accepted as the most aero front wheel short of a disc on a track.

Yeah, the first $6,000 wheelset.

This is back on, I got a call from you I think a while back but didn’t manage to save your number. We never got a consistant time to get out, but now we’re going to try again.

Tuesday Jan 10th. 12:05 at the starbucks at Glen Ranch Rd. and Portola Pkwy.

Hope to see you there.

I thought that you could get a front iO ofr $450. Did I just find a deal or a scam?

Also, why is this just for track use? Is it too light to be reliable on rough roads? Or is it not cross wind friendly?

$450 is about $2000 off an iO. This is track only because there is no braking surface. Where each “spoke” attaches to the rim there is a slight bulge, if you use a brake on the wheel, it will give you a pulse at the lever every time the wheel rotates and the slightly wider “blade” or spoke moves past the brake blocks.

Also it is super stiff and downright brittle especially in cold weather. It has no equal in the wind tunnel however, and a rear version at Kona would offer substantial benefit.

if you buy one I want a kick back. Something in a carbon road bike would be nice

Don’t know if its true…but I’ve heard they are not very durable. Very easy to break and won’t last long on the road. Seems to me that its not worth the $$ if you’ll need to replace it after a season. I can go through alot of HED3’s for the price of 1 IO. I’ve got some Specialized tri-spokes that have to be over 12 years old and still run true and may very well last another 10 years. I ride them everyday, as they are my training wheels.

there’s another, legendary, only available in myth uber-wheelset possibly coming out too. Not my info to share though, someone else on the board. They’ll probably drop a hint eventually:) Same scary pricing as the Mavic!

Any wind-tunnel data to back up the Mavi iO’s speed? I’ve heard it is downright lousy in the tunnel. The H3 is apparently significantly faster. The iO is a mythical alright… mythical performance. The great numbers are for Mavic’s smaller trispoke, which they morphed into the iO. Each blade interferes a great deal with the one behind it. The Mavic is a lot of hype.

I’ll be more intrigued to see if Hed releases the deep H3 that Lance and George used in the '05 TdF. Hed needs some wheels to get them back into the mix.

I’m personally excited to take the Bontrager Aeolus’s out for a spin this season…

The latest Jets look pretty nice and the Stinger 90 look pretty nice. But I agree that the Hed 3 Deep would be really nice. They’ve been around besides the '05 TDF and I’ve seen them, but my guess is they must be as manufacturable as the 3D-Disk or the Kona Coast rear.

First time I’ve ever seen a rear road one. All other rear versions I’ve seen were track specific.
