MIT Wind Tunnel Test Video

As done by westwood velo…

Interesting link… what I read from their website (among other things) is that the best aero helmet can be an individual thing… whereas this fellow had best results with a Giro Adv II instead of Spiuk (which did best in the aero helmet test on mannequins). And on top of that the tail 2 inches off the back was better then being flush.

There are also interesting tips on this forum about hand positioning, etc…

So, in summary, everyone needs to go to the MIT wind tunnel (at about $800/hr) to get themselves tested to find out what works best for them?

ok nice to see the setup there

what i wonder is did you do only 0 degree yaw?

and only 1 speed in the tunnel and is yes why?
cees

Hi. I’m Steve, Director of Westwood Velo. someone had noted that some people had seen the videos. i just got them up there. sorry that they are all choppy and long. as much as i’d like to, i just dont ahve the experience or time to make them nice and fancy. but i think they are pretty interesting, particularly listening to Mark Cote, etc.

I think they had the rig at 13 degrees yaw? atleast thats what i thoought it was. I was the one in the video getting tested.
I rode the Giro II last year for a bunch of tTT’s and then Mark had been telling me the Spiuk was killing it in the tunnel, so i got one of those.
but as you can see in the test, the Giro outperformed by about 12 seconds (all based on 40k tt, 30mph) over the spiuk. then tipped up so tip was about 2inches off back gave further gains, and then lastly taping up the cavity really helped as well. so, i am going with giro hereafter.
the LG actually was about neck and neck with Giro but i just dont love the fit at all. just doesnt fit nice on my melon.

anyway, we have a few good threads on our site, the need for speed thread, and power training. if anyone has any questions on the tunnel trip, etc. you can post them here, or over there. its a free site there as well.

without addressing the cost of the tunnel time, there are some things which are repeatable rider to rider…some equipment choices on the bike, gloves/no gloves, glasses/no glasses, etc. but things like booties, or helmets or positioning are very personal. Mark did say for bigger riders, the Praying “landis” position was no real gain, but yes, try to have hands above elbows a bit.
