Obviously it’s whatever wheel is on my bike, but pretend (just pretend) that I could put any one front wheel on my bike, which one would make me pee my pants with delight?
you could try Tibbs’ head, I hear it’s round and smooth and very aero
and the squealing you hear wouldn’t be wind noise
.
My opinion is the Mavic IO is the fastest front available- intended only for track but don’t tell Jan Ullrich that.
Fastest overall wheelset? I vote for Zipp 909’s. I’ll be on a new set Sunday in Ann Arbor.
It would have to be the new diamond-encrusted, platinum-plated, 13" spinner with whitewall tire. Of course, this assumes that you are running the super-raked gold-plated chopper forks that match the wheel. Needless to say, at this point, you’ve prolly already had your solid platinum custom 40 oz braze-on cages welded onto your frame, so you will be rolling in style.
I don’t recommend peeing your pants, though. That’s only cool during races, not when cruising.
As the king of cool, I know you already knew this. This must be a test.
h3 gets my vote but saying that I use a zipp 404 due to it’s freakin light weight and versitilty
.
The one on Clas’ bike
.
Good point.

Must be nice to try all the fun toys you sell! I am sure there are also cons to owning your own bikeshop.
This one…it went 152MPH…
Olympic Cyclist and IRONMAN triathlon winner, John Howard set a 152.2 Miles per Hour speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah on July 20, 1985. He is drafting in the wake of a 500 Horsepower Streamliner. This type of human powered record is called motor pacing. The pace vehicle was modified by adding a large tail fairing to the 337 MPH record holding Vesco Streamliner. The fairing keeps the wind off John and reduces the aerodynamic drag he is pedaling against to near nothing.
what is that setup…I have heard of these speed records but would like to know how its acheived…what is the setup…what is the rider attached to behind the “pace” car…looks interesting…how does the rider get up to speed and how long does he keep the speed up to count as a record?
HED3 front and Campy Ghibli rear disc!! I’ve used HED and Zipp disks too, but the Campy seems (?) faster.
Zipp Z9 disc with the Mavic IO front wheel. I think that’s about $6,000 worth of wheels!
Dave from VA
rocketman,
Only because it costs 2.5 times more than either of the other two. If it didn’t seem to ride faster, how would one justify the cost?
Well you see…I spent less on my Campy Ghibli then anyone else with a HED, Zipp, or Renn spent on theirs!! : )
Just watch around for deals. Once in awhile you find a steal, I did!! Some people just don’t know what the items are really worth and don’t know what they have. I’ve been racing for 14 years. Sometimes it takes awhile to find a steal!
Yes, but is the Ghibli faster than the now discontinued, collectible Hed 3D?
I have to wonder.
my opinion…and everyone has one. I’ve tried to get hold of a HED3 disc but have not been able to thus far. All I can see is the tubulance off the “not flat” surface of the 3 spokes. If indeed the “non-flat” surface of the HED3 disc is faster then any current flat surface (not counting the golf ball dimples of a Zipp) disc out there…why is no one making one? One must wonder!
I’ll stick with my Campy Ghibli for now…until, someday when I get hold of a HED3 disc to try it out! (BTW - almost had one a few months ago…but it disappeared off eBay. I had emailed a few times to the owner but never got an email back…scary…so I let it go. It then disappeared before the auction ended)
