Looking for some mini pump suggestions. I plan on carrying CO2, but want a backup mini for long rides. The Topeak Micro Rocket Carbon looks pretty cool, just doesn’t look like it works too well unless you are a gorilla. The mountain pumps out there are smaller but it looks like they don’t have enough pressure. I want something that gets up to at least 100 psi.
I have a Blackburn Airstick – I like the pump, it just doesn’t fit in a jersey pocket very well.
the Topeak is trick. it takes a long time to get reasonable pressure but like you, i carry CO2 with me and if i’m in a situation where i need to pump, it’d be my second or third flat of the day. At which point i would only need enough pressure to get me to the nearest cliff (where i would promptly throw my bike off).
I really like the Topeak Micro Rocket MasterBlaster** **- the carbon one looks cool and I am sure weighs a few grams less, but I think you can get the aluminum one for about $15 if you shop around and it does the trick just as well. I had a Crank Bros one with the little pressure gauge (that never seemed to work) for awhile and was always having problems with it until it just fell apart. This works much better and also works great with my old Specialized Trispokes that I ride a lot. I’ve found that I can get them up to a reasonable pressure pretty quickly. Great product that fits easily into an under-seat wedge or jersey pocket.
I was going to recommend the Innovations Second Wind combination CO2 / mini pump that I have been using for 5-6 years, but apparently they don’t make it any more. They make a similar MTB version (http://www.genuineinnovations.com/bikeprods.aspx?prodid=1006), but apparently it has a 50 psi max pressure. Mine will get you up to 80-90 psi (depending on how patient you are), so it makes a good backup to get you home if you run out of CO2.
If you run out of CO2…thats why they make cellphones : )
Actually, all I carry is a cellphone. Yesterday I broke a seat post bolt about 5 miles from my house, pulled out the cellphone, called my wife…she brought me a new bolt and the correct allen wrench…2 minute repair and I finished my ride. : )
Yeah, the cell phone works great, except when you are 50 miles from home and the wife isn’t too thrilled about trying to find you out on some country road somewhere. Sounds like your wife is more understanding and knows her way around tools.
My goal is to be able to get home no matter what. I did a ride a long ride blew thru two tubes and 1 patched tube, ran out of C02 (I had two cartridges and a loaner from another cyclist), felt helpless and stupid for not carrying a pump. A local cyclist called his wife and she came and picked us up, went back to his house and put in a new tube and used his floor pump. It was a long day…
