Mingus Mountain Madness - May 3

Absolute bikes is sponsoring Mingus Mountain Madness on May 3rd this year. The Sedona Century, normally held about this same time, has been cancelled due to lack of sponsorship.

The MMM will start with a breakfast at the Verde Valley School “early” Sunday morning. The school is located in the Village of Oak Creek which is about 6 miles south of Sedona. The ride will start at 7:30am and head south to Beaverhead Flat, to Cornville, through Cottonwood, up to Jerome, over the mountain, down to Prescott Valley and back again. 108 miles with 12,000 ft of climbing if you go the entire distance. 80 miles with about 9,000 ft of climbing if you turn around at the top of Mingus Mountain and not descend the Prescott side. The ride will be fully supported with vehicles. There is a shorter version also that has you turning around in the old mining and ghost town of Jerome. Jerome is 5 miles up Mingus Mountain. This ride would be about 60 miles.

I’ll be riding the 80 miler and hope to survive : )

If any one would like to join me, I’ll offer an ST discount for rooms that weekend.

That sounds like fun and I am going to try and work it into my schedule. It will be a great warm up for TTT. Maybe I can convince that sissy Desert Dude to come.

On a side note, aren’t you the one who tried to talk me out of doing this ride a few years back

Breakfast burritos and Pepsi? If so I’m in.

Is your 12yo daughter going to taunt me about my small biceps and keep pointing out that hers are bigger? If so I just don’t think I’m mentally strong enough to take that sort of verbal abuse again.

I already explained to my daughter that it is not nice to pick on the weak and feeble (you) or the big and dumb (HoosierLoser).

Probably so. Its a tough tough ride. Even with support it will be very hard. To do this ride as an unsupported training ride would be nuts.

I fear Mr. Bubbles might have to re-adopt the name Mrs. Bubbles should he attempt the 108mile version.

OH OH OH!!! I see the makings of a smackdown! : )

You want a piece of me, we all know you crack at 18 miles of climbing.

That’s not cracking, thats waiting b/c I feel sorry for you that you’ve been riding alone all day.

Sounds pretty brutal. Well if the OC marathon plans fall through then me and possibly a few others might be. I kinda want to see a smackdown. I doubt that I could hang on during that battle but you never know.

I never realized you were so caring.

It’s a little know trait.

You’ll need to do a full report including lots of photos of desert dude collapsed on the side of the road.

Zipp,
Are you still riding the 80 miler?

-Jeff

I was until a few days ago. I got a call from my sister in Wisconsin. My dad is passing away and I need to go see him before he goes. We are flying out tomorrow morning to Sturgeon Bay.

Sorry

I am so sorry to hear.

Thank you…

I was looking forward to riding with a few ST’rs. Just got a powertap and was looking forward to see what kind of power readings I’d get going up through Jerome. The road is quite steep inside the ghost town of Jerome, about 5 miles up the mountain. I was out yesterday with a few climbs around town and saw lots of 380+ watts at about 6-7 miles per hour going up some of my regular short 1 mile climbs.

Does this Mingus mountain madness still happen? I’d like to do this ride sometime in the next 2 weeks if possible as part of my training.

Do the roads have bike lanes/shoulders to ride on? Is it a busy highway with lots of traffic?

Anyone interested in doing this ride?
