Milton, ON council approves velodrome

http://www.raisethehammer.org/article/1531/to2015_confirms_milton_velodrome

Very excited about this opportunity for Ontario cycling. Forest City is just too distant for me. Hopefully they close this deal. We love to bash Peter Gilgan in these parts, but he’s an avid cyclist, and the man came through with cash again.

Better to have it where people want it then waste time trying to get Hamilton to take it.

Peeps from all over Southern Ontario will drive to Milton…easy 30 min drive for lots of us

That will be awesome!

I know Peter and he does do good things in this area.

Awesome. I’m all for a hight quality Velodrome close to me. However, one thing that really struck me was the projected annual operating cost of the facility (granted, I don’t know much about this). One of the things that has always impressed me about the Forest City Velodrome is their ability to operate on a what appears to be a shoe-string budget.

I was talking to a friend about Milton just last week. He has family there, and mentioned the recreation centre - something like 5 rinks, full stands, olympic sized pool plus second pool, etc. Massive.

Their property taxes aren’t that high, either… amazing what a population base can do for you! That growth - and the resulting welcome taxes - are doing good things up there!

It’s not all good. They are destroying valuable farmland and sensitive areas to build it all.

the milton velodrome is apparently going to be a multi-use facility a 3-lane run/walk track in the concourse and significant infield space they plan to make available for multiple uses. see note 1:

and the “basic generic layout” posted on their fb page:

i’d expect a facility that will host the pan-am games to have slightly higher operating costs than the rather run-down old hockey rink that is FCV. don’t get me wrong; we love forest city, and are going back for an advanced track skills class next saturday. it is, however, the people that make it an incredible place - not the rather shabby facility itself.

cheers!

Have you considered the economical impact and benefits of a world class facility like the PanAm Velodrome in Milton when you make your statement?
You are uninformed.
FYI - There is only one indoor world class velodrome in the whole of North America, and its in Carson, California - USA.
Just securing one major track event like the Canadian Track Nationals & Ontario Track Championships every year or the UCI World Track Championships would reap major benefits for the whole community.
Not to mention or over emphasize the opportunity to develop talent within the GTA where there were no such venue nor opportunity for aspiring athletes and cyclists.

All I can say is, Way to go Milton…Bravo.
I’ve been to Milton many times, its proximity to the major city centres of Toronto, Hamilton, London and its natural geography / topography with the Niagara Escarpment in its backyard makes it one of the most picturesque small cities in Ontario.
Its no accident that its become one of Ontario’s fastest growing communities.

As an avid cyclist, I’m eagerly awaiting the first opportunity to ‘rip up that track’.

Quote: ‘You build it, they will come’

And they will…

The 2 lane 450 m track at the Olympic oval is a great place to run when its
-30 outside. Sounds like a great facility you are getting.

Good Lord, that looks awesome. My 142m local track is a bit of a toy…

I live 30 miles from a 335 concrete outdoor track, but I would prefer to live near your toy track! Indoor tracks rock.

I’m really pumped this is coming to town !!
Especially since its about a 10min ride from my house…
The drive to London to FCV is getting a little tiring

Awesome facility to see watch future Olympians grow up at

No doubt the land use for this is an issue, but it’s not material compared to the Mississauga-fication of Milton that’s ongoing. Ironically, the fruits of that development went into Peter Gilgan’s pocket and some of it re-emerged as funding and naming rights for the velodrome.

the only one in ontario (currently) is only 138m - shortest permanent track in the world:

the 50 degree banking is pretty impressive seen up close:

the bike park in the infield of yours looks like a hoot!

cheers!

Where is this track in the photo?

Where is this track in the photo?

London, ontario, canada
.

actually that’s in Boulder, Co

.

Thanks. I’ve ridden the track in Burnaby, B.C. which is about 200m I think. It has a pressurized fabric dome roof but the one in the photo looks as if it may have been built inside an existing warehouse. I’m interested to see the different types and lengths of indoor tracks to get an idea of the size of building needed to house them. I no longer live near the track and miss being able to ride it and I’m just trying to see how big of a lottery jackpot I need to build one in my backyard.

This would drive me nuts but it looks fun at the same time
