Military and Triathlon

Just out of curiosity, are there any military folk out there?

I am thinking of joining the reserves, and I am always interested in the diversity (craziness) of this forum:)

I think you will find a large Military Tri community. Mission oriented, hard charging type A personalities…I began my tri life back at Ft Lewis WA and rode with some amazing athletes. Of course current mission tempo can interfere with training.

"are there any military folk out there? "

Most of them hang out on the Lavender Room defending President Bush.

I grew up as a military brat, but I guess that doesn’t count.

And I was just going to thank you for your reply on my other post. Now I know your just looney

Yes.

There are plenty of opportunities to participate in triathlon while serving in the Reserves.

Hey there,
I’m a Marine Corps reservist and a triathlete. The reserves are great as long as you find a good unit to join. I was on active duty for 10 years before I joined the reserves so I’ve seen both sides. I really enjoy the reserves. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Blame that on my growing up on military bases.

Realize my dad was a military lifer. There were definate pros and cons of growing up that way. Over all, I’m thankful for the experience, but not so sure I’d want it for myself.

I’m in the Canadian Navy and the military is usually really good giving you time to train.

I’m a submariner by trade, which makes training while on sea duty, well, impossible! That leaves me two years of shore duty out of every five for me to pretend to be a triathlete.

I would think the reserves would be much more flexible, unless of course you get sent to the sandbox.

One of our country’s best triathletes, Timothy O’Donnell, is a LTJG in the Navy.

It’s a lot bigger than you think it is. Best of luck!

I’m an Air Force Reservist (for about 4 more days). I spent 9 years on active duty, 2 years as a full time reservist, and 1 as a traditional reservist. In 4 more days I’ll be a 100% civilian for the first time since I started college and I’m looking forward to it! I’m currently taking a break (2-3 years) from the military while I buy and build my business and then I’ll join the Air National Guard (hopefully) to finish out my 20 years.

If you have any specific questions about the AF Reserves let me know.

Plenty. There are at least 5 ex or current Rangers on the board.

Army, in my former life:

Enlisted - 12B, combat engineer
Officer - Judge Advocate

There are a number of current/former on this board. “Will” is a former Infantry Officer and Ranger. Tom Demerly is a former Marine. I believe “Spot” is/was Airforce (please don’t kill me if I got it wrong).

Former active duty enlisted Marine and now Navy reserve officer.

It would be nice if the reserves meant only two days a month and only two weeks of active duty a year :). Full time job + reserves + triathlon can be a huge undertaking at times, but well worth the effort.

am a paratrooper in the british army , and last year mixed the army life stlye and training quite well putting in 2hr 02 mins stardard distance race on a day run day .our army champs are in bournemouth each yr and we have our own wave , i finished 4th in 2hr04min usually won in sub 2hrs .airborne all the way
