Mile limits for regular running shoe and racing shoes

I run in Brooks Ravenna or Saucony Guide and I swear by 200 miles they are shot. I buy last year’s models for roughly $50-$59, so I figure I’m paying half the “normal” cost of high end running shoes, so I’m getting 400 miles per “normal” cost.

By 200 miles the harder black service is probably worn down by over a mm.

They are all so different so it really depends.
I have seen two divergent trends in recent years though:

  1. Light & mid weight trainers that wear out quicker (ie - 11+ oz Saucony Ride 2 from 2008 lasted me 500 miles; sub-10 oz. Ride 5-6 from 2013 just 300 miles)

  2. Medium weight Trail runners (11-12 oz) seem to be getting some virtually indestructible soles (North Face, Brooks Cascadia & Saucony Xodus for example). So those might be good for 1k who knows?

Just go by feel, I say. Some migh tbe dust at 200 miles, others 500+ …

I dont think you need to be too precise about it. Everyone runs differently, so theres no one limit that works.

I’d just get a second pair when you suspect the old shoes are on the way out. (if you’re clever - buy ahead and stash the shoes)

That way you can test them every now and then to see if you notice a difference. If you dont then the shoes are still good.

It doesnt cost any more and you can save a lot of money on physio bills - and you have a spare pair in case of emergencies.
