Modern English…“I’ll Melt With You”
.
Thompson Twins - King for a Day. (I wasn’t the coolest back in the 80s…and I really haven’t changed that much…)
PS - by the late 80s, I would say The Replacements “I’ll be you”
All 3 of these songs will make digesting my lunch very difficult.
I’ll take the Pixies please…maybe Gigantic…
Talking Heads’ “Once in a Lifetime”
That would be my choice to so I will move onto The Smiths, “How Soon Is Now”
Hard to pick one so I’ll role into an 80’s desert island top 10
The above mentioned:
-
U2 - “Bad”( live version)
-
Byrn/Eno - “Regiment”
-
Japan - “Gentleman Take Polaroids”
-
Buzzcocks - " Why Can’t I Touch It"
-
Rob Base & DJ Easy Rock - “It Takes Two”
-
Jesus & Mary Chain - “Just Like Honey”
-
Cocteau Twins - “Akea Guinea”
-
Tangerine Dream - “Love on a real Train( Risky Business)”
-
Robert Fripp/Andy Summers - “Bewitched”
I could go on and on. Worked at my university /college radio station for 4 years when I was going to school during the early to mid 80’s. Had my own show for three years. Awesome time in music to be doing that. So much was going on. Many of the styles of pop music that are really popular now were just starting to take shape or really emerge from hiding at that time.

Am I the only one who thinks the studio version blows away the live version (assuming headphones are involved, i.e. not being at a concert)? Live isn’t bad, but the studio is far better.
Anyone for “South Central Rain”?
Billy Idol: Rebel Yell
and most anything by Talking Heads.
I’d agree with you. The guitar work has a very layered, complex feel to it - that get’s lost somewhat on the live version. But if you saw/remember the Live-Aid performance…the live version brings back memories of one of the most amazing moments I’ve ever seen on TV.
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence

***i’ll be dancin’ with myse-e-elf, oh, oh, ah ah. ***

Unforgettable Fire is still one of my favorite albums of any band, and probably because it was the first concert I ever saw ($35 scalped ticket in Meadowlands Arena - try that nowadays). Live breaking into to Sympathy for the Devil and others was super cool, but like you said, the studio is more complex (delay the bells and woodwinds until the 2nd half, etc). Larry Mullen Jr’s drumming fills/overlays puts it over the top. If they got rid of Wire, 4th of July and Indian Summer Sky and just had UFF, Promenade, Bad, that would just be a rippin’ stretch of music. Great rainy Sunday/hangover/cooldown album.
That said, I nominate Promenade as sleeper song of that album for the mid-80’s.
I should have said the Live Aid live version of “Bad” - that’s the best 10 minutes of live music that I have ever heard/seen. Outstanding stuff!

I gotta agree with I’ll Melt with You - great memories from that one.
I think this is early 80’s, but The Romantics - That’s What I Like About You - has to be on the list.

Last I checked, '89 was still in the 80’s.
You scared me for a second there. I was thinking Eurotrash, but then you caveated. My bad for impure thoughts.
Don’t forget anything from Poison or the other hair’em, scare’em bands.
