Michigan coaching job

Just read a report that said, even though Hoke hasn’t been fired, rumors are that Les Miles (LSU) might go to Michigan. So I have a simple question: why would any good coach from a large program, like LSU, want to go to a shit hole like Michigan?

ETA: It’s still a final…App State 34 - Michigan 32

I do find it a bit suspicious he tweeted a Go Blue message b/f the OSU game. Last time his name swirled was for the Arkansas job and he found himself with a nice new contract extension and raise within 2 days of that rumor.

I cannot imagine wanting to go into that shit show at Michigan. I guess with the Mad Hatter I won’t be surprised if he goes, but I’d also be surprised he would leave LSU.

I can’t imagine Michigan waiting around to find out about Hardballs the timing is kind of tough for pro to college transitions if they want to sway any commits in time for signing day.

Because it is a blue blood program and they have a ton of money to throw at someone. Also, Miles is a Michigan grad and has a ton of ties to the program. Him or Harbaugh would be be God in Michigan if they could revive that program.

Taking a page out of Nick Saban’s book perhaps? Saban did something similar when the UT job came open… end up with a nice contract extension.

I have very good sources that say the job will go to Charlie Weiss or Lane Kiffen.

You can’t imagine why a Michigan man would want to go back to one of the most storied programs in college football and try to be the guy that brings them back to glory? Really?

Every OSU fan hopes it is Weiss. Everything he touches in college football turns to shit.

They’d be gods IF they could revive it. What’s the chance of that happening, regardless of the quality of the coach? How can you recruit kids to go live in Michigan, when they have choices in much better climates? Schools like Michigan & Nebraska need to accept that their glory days are behind them.

BTW, looks like the firing of Hoke is official.

Yup, they might as well shut down the program because nobody has ever chose to live in a cold weather climate.

I think he was narrowing it down to sane people.

On a related note. One of my business partners moved from Florida to accept a position at Northern Michigan University on the upper peninsula. We were talking this past January and he was thinking he had made a mistake. He does love the summers and fall though.

LMAO!! Storied? You mean a nightmare don’t you? It’s still a final App 34 - Michigan 32

Did I mention both my daughters were at App in '07

There’s a big leap between accepting that you’re not going to be a national powerhouse and shutting down the program. There may be some kids who are happy to move up north, but not likely to be enough to built a consistent championship team.

I’m actually of the mindset college football is just about to enter into the biggest era of parity ever. The proliferation of spread/read option with snaps every 20 seconds or less is rendering the 3-4 defense full of 320 lb DE’s and DT’s controlling the line pointless. There are a LOT of athletes to choose from now at QB since a quick footed kid is paramount, passing ability much less important. Plus when guys are open in these offenses they are REALLY open so the quality of the pass doesn’t need to be like an NFL timing route. And with a defense like say Saban’s not being able to drop 8 in pass coverage any longer as in years past the field gets moved horizontally rather than vertically. Speed kills and that is a commodity much easier to find than the make up of a typical championship team of years past.

I believe the playoff 4 will be a rotating carousel of schools you’d never thought of and it’s going to be exciting for sure. No one plays defense any longer in college ball very well and I think mostly that’s because they can’t…at least not for 4 quarters at these paces.

I see eleven national championships and 42 conference titles. Do you know what the word storied means?

They are not good right now. I don’t see any reason why they won’t be good in the future if they hire the right person.

Yeah, that cold/rainy weather really seems to have killed recruiting at Wisconsin, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan State,…

There will always be kids who don’t want to leave their home region. there will always be kids who want to go to historic programs. There will always be kids who want to go where mom or dad went to school. There will always be kids who hate the bullshit stupid humidity of Florida.

I think you’re probably right regarding the impact these offenses are going to have, but at the end of the day, I still think athletic talent will be a differentiator over the long run. Most of the talent seems to be coming out of the south and those kids are choosing warm weather schools.

No question college football is about recruiting. That said there are a ton more kids who can run an up tempo offense very well vs that of the prototypical pocket passing centric offense of old. I would guess it’s 10 to 1 in favor of a hyper mobile kid who can run like a fart in the wind and pass reasonably well vs a great pocket passer standing in the pocket. When I look at all the talent at QB coming into the SEC West next year it’s all super quick kids who can fly, throw it ok and run these types of offenses already in H.S. So, where you had maybe 5 great passers to walk into a program and spend a year learning the offense you have dozens of kids who can show up at 18 years old and haul ass at 20 seconds a snap after playing in a spring game.

Michigan football is far from dead. Les could revive it, just not sure I’d have the balls to leave a sweet gig where he is a hero and risk it up north at his age. Will be interesting to see!

Not sure if serious. Have you seen Michigan’s recruiting classes the last decade? They have a top-10 recruiting class, every single year. Kids are bailing this year because they don’t know who the coach will be next season, but at points this season they had commitments from the nation’s #1 RB (Damien Harris from Kentucky), #1 TE (Chris Clark from Connecticut), top-5 WR (George Campbell from Florida), another top-10 RB (Michael Weber), a big-time offensive tackle (Grant Newsome) from New Jersey…they also pulled probably the nation’s #1 recruit last season in Jabrill Peppers from New Jersey. Not only have they had zero issues recruiting while they have sucked, they have had zero issues recruiting out of state guys.

Fact of the matter is Michigan is Michigan, one of a handful of historic blueblood programs. I mean, how the hell does Notre Dame continue to recruit top-10 classes every year, even though they have sucked for the better part of three decades - have you ever been to South Bend, Indiana?

Over the last 10 years they all seem to be in warmer climes

I heard Jim Harbaugh might be interested in the job. Rather, some people really really want Harbaugh as the new coach and have set up a charitable donation program (goal = $1 million) to entice him to come.

Drew & Mark (105.1) interviewed one of the guys organizing the effort yesterday on the radio. Good stuff.
