Michael Moore subpoenaed by White House, why?

They were bored?

Because he knows a lot about a lot of things, and he has credibility.

Real answer: because some politicians believe they can earn some votes by saying certain things to Michael Moore
.

i assume because of the trade embargo with cuba.
i also assume that he was hoping this would happen.

The Whitehouse subpoenaed Moore? Do you mean the Justice department?

I am guessing it has to do with violating the commercial sanctions regarding Cuba.

I was wondering about that myself. I wasn’t aware the White House had subpoena authority. Do they?

Because he knows a lot about a lot of things, and he has credibility.

Classic!

Apparently, a jelly donut was stolen from the White House Coffee room. Moore seemed like the likely culprit.

Link, please?

It doesn’t appear that Moore has yet been served. He says that the Bush administation issued a subpoena, but I haven’t seen any news that Moore has actually been served. Now, the Bush does not have the power to subpoena anyone. That’s going to have to come from another departartment, which technically could be the “Bush Administration”. Also, it is ILLEGAL for a us citizen to travel to Cuba. It’s been illegal for a LONG time. In the movie Sicko Moore travels to Cuba. So, he was involved in an illegal activity and is profiting from that activity. Why wouldn’t he be charged for that when us citizens who simply vacation in Cuba are prosecuted for that?

I hope he brings his camera along. Should be interesting!

"Also, it is ILLEGAL for a us citizen to travel to Cuba. It’s been illegal for a LONG time. "

Anyone care to explain why? The Cuban missile crisis was forty-five years ago. Americans are the only people on the entire planet with government travel restrictions to Cuba. What is the US government is so afraid of? Losing some votes in Miami?

What is the US government so afraid of?

Are you so naive as to ask this question seriously or are you just trying to be witty?

**Anyone care to explain why? **

Not really as it isn’t the point of this thread.

Oh I think its relevant. I don’t like Moore, but I like less that the US Government thinks it can tell me what countries I’m allowed to travel to.

It is a dumb law.

I like less that the US Government thinks it can tell me what countries I’m allowed to travel to.

Well now, aren’t you special? So very, very special.

No, I don’t think there is anything special about a grown man being allowed to travel the earth as he sees fit.

They have a point, though. Why restrict travel to Cuba? We don’t restrict travel to a lot of other countries with oppressive governments, and it’s not like Cuba is a threat to us anymore.

The restriction on travel is not because we are afraid of Cuba or anything contained therein. The travel restriction is a form of diplomatic and economic punishment, i.e., isolation. Now, whether that policy is warranted now or ever was warranted is a wholly different question than the sophomoric inquiry as to what the U.S. feared about Cuba.

OK, I gotcha. The question then becomes: Why do we insist on punishing Cuba, when we do such good business with other oppressive regimes? And how effective has that policy proven? And considering that it seems to have proven wholly ineffective, what’s the point?
