Michael Hepburn's SRM data for his Elite Aussie TT Champs win on Wednesday

Hepburn (186cm/76kg) averaged 408 watts over the 45km course. Average speed of 47.9kph with an average cadence of 99rpm.

In the last 7 minutes he pushed 419 average watts for an average speed of 58kph.

This kid is only 22 and has huge potential. He beat last year’s winner, Luke Durbridge, by 11s.

It is hard to tell with the level of smoothing there but it looks like his pacing was superb. Harder on the ups, easier on the downs. Only had 10 watts left to add at the end.

Wow. Very cool to see the stable HR over almost 20 minutes of ascending.

Judging by some of the power numbers thrown out here on ST plenty of people could do that…
.

These kids - Durbridge and Hepburn - came straight out of the Aussie track program where they were in the team pursuit group. Incredible pacing, positions, and form.

We are gonna get a whole generation of kids raised on SRMs =)

It’s nice to see him winning with ‘only’ 5.4 watts per kilogram. Very refreshing, assuming his weight is accurate. Maybe the drug testing really is toning down the high octane stuff. What would be really nice to see would be 22 year olds getting regular podiums at grand tours like they did pre epo.

Great (Aussie) stuff. Interested to see that 408w = 47.9kph but just 11 more watts (albeit a lazy 419w!!!) gave 58kph. I’m genuinely interested to hear from the power gurus why this would be?

In the last 7 minutes, as the course slightly descended to the finish line, Hepburn pushed 419 average watts to maintain an average speed of 58kph.

Downhills always help…

Ahh ha! Of course - how stupid of me.

He was flying for sure though! Incredible power.

Do you have some data on this?

I only looked at Tour winners from 1947 through 1991. 5 or 6 were 25 or younger. The only 22 year old winner was Fignon and he confessed to doping.

Edit: Looked at Giro from 1946 - 1991. Saronni was 21. Another was 22 and Merckx turned 23 during his first win.

Only 1.5% gradient. Pretty impressive

Wasn’t there some guy on here who claimed 5.4 w/kg and thought it wasn’t a big deal recently?

I only need to find a another 2.5w/kg and I’ll be all over this guy

Podiums, equals top 3. I didn’t say drug free, either, just no high octane stuff, like epo, transfusions, etc. And 22 could also mean young 20s versus riders in in the 90s and 2000s who have become fast after ‘years of maturity’, meaning late 20s or early 30s. And grand tours are giro, veulta, and tdf.

Meh… Starky would crush him. Is his FTP like 500?

Well he was using a Quarq but yeah his protocol did not include going as hard as he could for an hour.

Especially when you add the pressure of race day nerves and all that.

To the op who posted about it being downhill, it’s all the more impressive he could hold that kind of power at the end of ride.
