Metatarsal issues and cycling shoes

I have been developing metatarsal issues in my left foot that seem to be a result of switching over to a new Specialized carbon-sole shoe (road shoe). When I return to my old Specialized shoes (non-carbon) there is no pain. I have tried to position the cleat as close as possible to resemble that of the old configuration, but I am wondering if the rigid carbon sole is just too much. Should I consider any inserts with metatarsal pads (the stock inserts of the Specialized do have them). Perhaps continue tweaking the cleat position as I have no issues in the right foot. Or read the writing on the wall and make the switch to a new shoe (I have no loyalties to Specialized - I just got the carbon upgrade because a friend was selling them). Any input would be appreciated. Thx.

Interesting … I also use Specialized Carbon shoes and developed Metararsal issues this year also

Looks like we are the only ones …

I am switching over to a Shimano shoe - I’ll let you know how it goes.

i can’t see that it’s because of the carbon itself.
i’m guessing that the shape of the shoe is different? either more/less curve on the bottom, or a narrower toebox?
the hard plastic soles on non-carbon shoes are plenty stiff enough to give you foot problems, if they don’t fit well.
