Dude, the Etymology of Metal dates to the early to mid 70’s.

Foghat was the first band to get it right: Driving Wheel, Honey Hush, Slow Ride was the first ‘metal’ band back in 1977 = Foghat Live. UFO was there too as savvy critics like myself declare both albums Foghat Live and Strangers in the Night the two best live hard rock albums ever recorded.

Of course, Lynyrd Skynyrd pioneered what guitar rock was all about in 1973 with the triple lead guitar attack. Played well later by the Outlaws and Molly Hatchet.

Therefore, Lynyrd Skynyrd is the genesis of metal .Freebird was the first recording of what shredding on the guitars is all about.

Interesting that you didn’t mention Black Sabbath.

Motörhead was formed in 1975 (source, wikipedia), certainly more metal than Lynyrd Skynyrd…

I would put Skynard into the Metal category about as much as I would put vanilla Ice into the rap category.
hard rock, sure, metal, no way.

STOP! Collaborate and Listen!

Thank you for opening my eyes to a fact which I will now regard as gospel.

You are indeed a cesspool of knowledge and I remain amazed by the depth of your understanding of American rock.

Interesting that you didn’t mention Black Sabbath.

-or Steel Dragon. I’m starting to doubt his credentials.

What? No Judas Priest?

What? No Judas Priest?

Or Guns n Roses. There has hardly been a more intensely focused period in rock-n-roll than GNR’s 87 to 91.

I love GNR and would consider them, hands down, the greatest…possibly the ONLY rock band from that period.

…but they ain’t metal.

Foghat? Skynyrd? Metal? Surely you jest. Since Foghat spun out of Savoy Brown, a British Boogie and Blues Band, I don’t think Lonesome Dave, if he were still alive, would take kindly to that. If you compare either of these bands to any of Barry’s list, you will hear the difference. I will admit that Foghat Live is a rocking album, but Metal it is not.

You miss the point. Mojo is an expert and has distinguished hisself not only here with his understanding of musical roots, but also in the ST Investment Game - where he managed to turn $100K into $0.19 in a mere month. But I digress…

The point is the fact that skittle is the genesis of Savoy Brown, and thus skittle is the root of heavy metal, the Beatles notwithstanding.

WTF is “metal” anyway?

I’ve heard the term “Camaro Rock” … Nebula, Fu Manchu, Nashville Pussy, etc

no one seems to wanna categorize Korn as metal or musicians for that matter but i like 'em. hard with a hint of sensitivity and a unique sound. cool vids.

Hate, something, sometime, someway, something kicked on the front floor…
Mine? Something, inside.
I’ll never ever follow.
So give… me… some… thing… that… is… for… real.
I’ll never ever follow.

Get your boogie on…
Get your boogie on…

Hate, something, someway, each day, feeling ripped off again. NO!
Why? This shit inside.
Now everyone will follow.
So give… me… no… thing… just… feel.
And now this shit will follow.

God paged me, you’ll never see the light, who wants to see?
God told me, you already got the life, oh I see…
God paged me, you’ll never see the light, who wants to see?
God told me, you already got the life, oh I see…

Each day I can feel it swallow, inside something took from me.
I don’t feel your deathly wave.
Each day I feel so hollow, inside always beating me,
You will never see, so come dance with me.

Dance with me
Dance with me
Dance with me
Dance with me (Rumbiddieboo Rumbiddieboo
Dance with me Rumbiddieboo Rum bum dee dum dee
Dance with me bum diddie doo Rumbiddieboo)
ME!

God paged me, you’ll never see the light, who wants to see?
God told me, you already got the life, oh I see…
God paged me, you’ll never see the light, who wants to see?
God told me, you already got the life, oh I see…

Got the life
Got the life
Got the life
Got the life
Got the life
Got the life
Got the life
Got the life

Got… the… life.

Sorry Barry, Megadeth and Metallica may have sold more albums, but Slayer were harder, heavier, more talented, more aggressive, more metal, just MORE EVERYTHING than any of the others on your list.

Honorable mentions for me go to Faith No More (maybe not strictly metal but the best rock band of all time by a country mile IMO) and Mr. Bungle (occasionally ridiculously heavy in their Disco Volante period). And if we’re on the subject of Patton you can’t not talk about his metal superband, Fantomas (Patton, King Buzz, Dave Lombardo, Trevor Dunn)
