Just after it was announced that there may be bipartisan cooperation on the stimulus bill tonight, partisan extraordinaire himself Harry Reid on the Senate floor called to order special recognition for Senator Bill Nelson on “our side” for leading the team on the compromise bill. What? There is no “our side” in this, unless you are talking about the American people. This is not a Democrat vs. Republican issue. This is about our economy and is no time for “our side, their side, right or left, conservative or liberal” ideas. It is time for common sense, practical solutions to get us out of this mess. “Our side” in Congress should be bipartisan and on the side of the American people in general. I admire the Senators from both sides of the aisle to work hard to come up with a stimulus bill of consensus. It’s not perfect by any means, but a good start.
Do you really believe this is a good start? So how many more Trillions will we need to spend to finish all of this love fest.

This isn’t a love fest but at least we have a handful of Senators trying to work a solution which the American economy needs while getting rid of the partisan pet projects. I find this refreshing. What is your bipartisan solution?

Three moderate pubs get pulled over…consensus? bipartisan?
**Three moderate pubs get pulled over…consensus? bipartisan? **
It’s a start. By the way, most Americans are in the middle in their political views. If we take away the 10-15% of extremists on both sides, that leaves about 70% of Americans who are somewhere in the middle, some with leanings to the right and some to the left. Even if Washington doesn’t want to be bipartisan, the majority of Americans want them to be just that.
How is the so called “stimulus bill” going to stimulate the economy when the last 700bill didnt do crap for the economy…
I will say it here first…they will be asking for more in 6 to 12 months…
The CBO says this bill will be harmful to the economy in the long run…
the bill is 93% spending and a WHOOPING 7% stimulation…
What? There is no “our side” in this, unless you are talking about the American people.
Tell that to Senator McCain as well, who blasted his two Republican colleagues for jumping ship without consent.
Partisanship is intractable at all levels of government, in good times and bad. It’s the sad reality of our political system.

This is one of the more stupid comments I’ve seen in a long time here in The Lavender Room. That’s saying a lot.

Actually, Ken you might win those honors. Too bad, because I generally respect your views.
He just cited the CBO (Democrat run, BTW) report, which happens to be on the record if you care to actually read it.
To restate what I said in another thread:

Democrats keep trotting out the old Keynesian claptrap, which is now nearing 100 years old. There is absolutely no empircal proof that it has ever worked and much evidence that it has failed over and over. Japan did exactly the same thing and all it did was give them one of the highest gvt. debt levels in the world.
Again, I’ll point to India and Hong Kong from WWII to 2000. Hong Kong was actually poorer than India in 1945. HK chose capitalism. India chose big govt. 50 years later, HK’s per-capita income grew to be more than 10 times (!) India’s. Which way would you like the US to go?
