Memphis cycling and living?

How are cycling and living in the Memphis area, especially just south and east of Memphis? I have a good and firm job offer in south Memphis, but after enjoying Alaska for 11 years am very concerned about culture and heat shock. My stereotypical thoughts wonder if you are fighting off snakes, critters, rednecks, traffic and heat stress on every ride? Any input on real estate and the cost of living? Thanks.

the germantown area of memphis is nice. one of the more expensive areas, I would think. memphis is pretty flat, hot and humid in the summer, with year round riding. not many snakes. in my opinion, almost anything would be better than alaska. I get uncomfortable if it drops below 60F.

Do you say “bob-e-cue” instead of “barbeque?”

Do you have a black velvet painting of Elvis on your wall?

Are you 50 lbs. overweight?

If so, you’ll fit right in.

I lived there for 2 years and loved it. You can always cross the river and ride flat farm roads in Arkansas. No need to worry about wildlife, but the heat is a concern. You get used to it though.

Move to the east burbs of Memphis (Germantown, cordova, Collierville) Plenty good roads to bike on, but it is basically flat and Hot.

What’s the triathlon/multisport scene like in Fairbanks?

Thanks to all of you for the help. I’ll look east of Memphis. I also do appreciate the younger Elvis, so 1 out of 3…

We have one half-IM, the Sourdough Triathlon, $30 entry fee. Some years there may be one or two other tris, but they come and go. There’s usually some unique multisport stuff, like XX ski/MTB/run or maybe canoe/MTB/run (with your dog). Anchorage (360 miles south) has more action. Fairbanks has a good running club, cycling club and a couple of masters swim teams. There are several folks who are pretty serious triathletes, including one on the podium at IM Canada and Wisconsin. XX skiing and running are the biggest outdoor sports.
