Meirhaeghe News - Possibly a First

I know that I have said on the page that a top athlete, at the top of his/her game, in the full glare of the sports media, will not under any circumstances admit their guilt about drug use even in the face of a positive test. Nor will their supporters. They will always deny, deny, deny and/or blame the system, the testing and the offcials.

I know that this sounds odd but it is refreshing for Meirhaeghe to step forward, admit his guilt and then promptly retire.

It’s dispointing that he did not do this without being forced out with a positive test, but at least he did admit that he was wrong and will now be out of the sport.

There has to be some reason for the immediate retirement. Nicholas Axleson, I believe did the same thing a couple years ago. tested positive then admitted it and retired. Maybe they can avoid further prosecution or losing more of their palmares by retiring. Maybe the guys they beat and took prize money from cant come after them legally if they are retired? I dont know the answer but it seems odd that they just retire, no thought of serving a suspension and coming back “clean”
