Here’s the guy that shot and killed the idiot on Parliament Hill yesterday.

Sergeant at Arms of the House of Commons Kevin Vickers:

He was appointed Sergeant-at-Arms for the Canadian House of Commons on August 24, 2006, and began serving on September 1, 2006.
On October 22, 2014, during the Parliament Hill attack, Vickers was credited with the fatal shooting of the gunman in the Parliament Buildings, according to MPs and other witnesses. According to information gathered by CTV’s Craig Oliver, the gunman entered the Centre Block under the Peace Tower, shooting a Commons Security Guard in the leg, exchanging gunfire, before running down the Hall of Honour to an alcove by the entrance of the Library, which is beside Vickers’ office. Vickers pulled a 9mm handgun from a lockbox and entered the hall. He threw himself on the ground to lessen himself as a target and fired three shots that killed the gunman. A niece told the Calgary Sun, “This is the first time in his career that he’s shot anyone.”

And here’s his welcome into the House of Commons today:

Never mind the hat, he’s a BAMF. Did you see the video of him immediately after the shooting? Calm, cool and collected.
Well done sir!

The only way to make it better is that he used the mace on the asshole.

And then smoke-checked him.

The way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Well done Mr. Vickers.

Agreed.

The important part is that the good guy with a gun is a Law Enforcement Official (both as a member of the federal police and in his current capacity as the Parliamentary Sargent-at-Arms.
I do not want Joe Public being able to walk around armed in Canadian public venues, and I certainly do nor want my politicians to be armed.

The question on my mind is why did it fall on the the Sergant-At-Arms to stop this terrorist. Regular RCMP or LEO should have intercepted and shot this guy long before he got into Parliament with a rifle. The Sergant-At-Arms is really a last line of defense and is a remnant of a by-gone era, fulfilling mostly a ceremonial role today (fortunately not completely ceremonial).

That is not necessarily as important as you may think with regard to firearms training.

Now THAT is the key question. The police can’t be everywhere. As they say, with all due respect to law enforcement officers, when seconds count, the police are minutes away.

That. Is. Awesome.

My understanding is he is in charge of security for the Canadian Parliament. My guess is he was leading from the front.

That’s a real hero.

My dad worked with Vickers in the 90’s. Great member to work with was his comment.

What would have been really great was if he had beat the punk to a bloody mess with that huge mace of his.

And the story just keeps getting better.

He IS law enforcement! 29 year member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The bold was actually Doubletime’s quote. Not to speak for him, but I am sure he meant that he questions why armed RCMP weren’t able to stop this guy before Mr. Vickers had to retrieve a firearm in order to intervene.
