Apparently, it’s associated with longer telomeres, one of the structures associated with aging and age related disease.

I really wish they used a better name for it. Look at the countries bordering the Mediterranean, that’s a very varied cuisine.
The diet involves eating items off a menu that is rich in vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans and peas, unrefined grains, olive oil and fish. It keeps dairy, meat and saturated fats to a minimum. And you can have a glass of red wine with dinner without cheating.
With the exception of olive oil and wine, that describes the ingredients for the cultural/traditional diet in a huge proportion of the world.
So it basically support what most every dietitian has been promoting for the last 10+ years. Less saturated fast, more whole grains and good fats, lots of fruits and vegetables. Wow, ground breaking.
And lots of wine…
yeah and while all of the nutrition ppl have been advocating a diet high in “complex carbs” the country and world have been getting fatter. i will skip the pasta and bread and eat some lamb and red wine… and whole milk cheeses and yogurt too. Maybe that’s the Sardinian diet?
But the mechanism is purported to their high levels of antioxidants so they dampen the training response and are therefore bad for athletic performance. Sticking to donuts and beer.

The “Mediterranean” diet seems to have more emphasis on olive oil and nuts than the typical “eat lots of vegetables” advice. Who knows if the mechanism here is related to oil/nuts. Could be. Or maybe it’s just the vegetables, etc.
I’m not eating oily nuts…
I’m not eating oily nuts…
Why, what changed?

And lots of wine…
Yes. Wine can also be considered a fruit as well as hydration source ![]()
Having trouble finding a link to the study? Me too.
All I can find is that he is number crunching from the Nurse’s study, probably using his telomere measuring protocol to add that variable in.
Unless someone can dig better and provide a link, it looks like this is unpublished and not peer-reviewed.
You never called me back…
You never called me back…
Probably true, I’m not partial to needle marks.

I love how people hear what they want to hear about diet.
No job for you then in Russia…
Which I’m sure you’d be gutted about ![]()
