Welcome to the club.
We had our first neighborhood weed store open up a month ago. It’s in an old bank, so I’m guessing the weed is safe from burglary.
I’m flabberghasted that it didn’t pass in FL. Hell, recreational use is now legal in Washington D.C. You can own up to six plants and carry two ounces… and in FL it’s not even legal for medicinal use.

How the fuck do you get that I’m uptight? Especially about drugs?
Btw, there’s plenty of weed in CA. Ever heard of Humbolt county? Where do you Oregoners get the good shit?
Btw, I don’t pay any taxes on my dope.

My wife and I canceled out each other’s votes in Florida. I voted in favor or medicinal use, she voted against. She is a nurse and used to work in a detox facility, that might have influenced her opinion. I’ve never done drugs and wouldn’t, but watched my nephew lose a good job because he smoked weed after hours. IMO, weed is less harmful than too much alcohol. Guess Florida will have to wait for a while.

I completely agree. Legalize the grass, tax it and be done. I do not smoke and have problem with those who do. It smells nice and helps mask B.O. very well.
The one in Florida was poorly written. Correctly worded if could pass.

I don’t think it should be taxed at all.

My parents did the same thing. When pressed, my mom replied that she didn’t think alcohol should be legal either. I guess, at least, that’s an ideologically pure view as opposed to the hypocrisy that’s seen in the mainstream… I think she’d like Utah ![]()

Agree 100%. Actually, a lot of the stuff on the FL ballot was poorly worded. I got a 790 on the SAT verbal (seems so long ago) and read legal jargon daily and I still had to re-read several of the items on the ballot.
In the future they should just put something like “420 blaze it” and “buzz kill” on the ballot.

Just an FYI, with that attitude you will continue to live in a state where it is illegal. The only way to get enough of the Ned Flanders to vote in favor is throw them the bone of “we can use the tax money to pay for schools” or some other such nonsense.
Beer is taxed, wine is taxed, cigarettes are taxed, based on this precedent, why would you think it should not be taxed?

Sales tax at regular rates is tolerable. I don’t think The State should be dependent on the sale of drugs (including cigs, beer, etc.) for such a huge source of revenue.
In 2011 tax revenue from tobacco was over $17.6 billion.

Our government is now in the business of profiting off the sale of cigarettes. They *need *smokers (why do you think states and the fed are targeting e-cigs (here’s a hint - $$$$)).
Personally, I don’t give a fuck what Ned Flanders thinks. I think weed should legalized through legislation, not direct vote. I don’t think the government should taxing it at confiscatory rates, like in Colorado.
Oh, and were you aware of this little nugget?..
“Voters in Oregon, Alaska and Washington, D.C., legalized recreational marijuana Tuesday.
But without the support of the U.S. Congress, any of the new, voter-approved pot shops may not be able to survive a drug war-era tax code that already threatens many businesses in Colorado and Washington state.”
“A lot of times, instead of paying a tax rate that should be 30 to 40%, they are paying rates between 80 or 90%,” Cornelius, the accountant, said. “I even have a client right now that is paying more than 100% effective tax rate.”
This is what legalization is all about. Not freedom, my friend. It’s about money to The State. Sorry to rain on your parade.
My opinion? Total deregulation of pot. No government involvement whatsoever. Zero. At it’s most regulated level it should be treated like just another item on the menu at Starbucks.

Your tobacco tax revenue stuff is “true”, but skewed. You can pay $10 for a pack of cigarettes in NY and $4 in Virginia, difference being taxes. And actually the high taxes are probably reducing total revenue, because in case you hadn’t noticed, although it is slow, tobacco use continues to decrease. I don’t agree with the tax per se, but it is hard to argue that it is harming anyone to have excessive taxes on tobacco.
If you really think Federal tax laws are going to be hindrance I think you are kidding yourself. All it means is that it will be a cash business and there are certainly ways to work around the federal laws.
With four states now legalizing it, I don’t think the Federal government is going to start a showdown over states rights on this one, nothing to be gained.
Wasn’t marijuana decriminalized in OR back in the 70’s?

It isn’t my tobacco tax revenue stuff. It’s data from the agencies that collect the taxes. Also, if you clicked the link you will see that it’s broken down state by state.
What your suggesting here is to break federal tax law. That isn’t exacly in the spirit of “legalizing” pot, now is it? What I’m suggesting is changing the law.
Personally I kind of like how it’s done here in California. It isn’t legal but it has been given the lowest level of law enforcement priority possible. Almost everyone I know who smokes weed gets it through a dispensery (with some made up ailment as an excuse). I don’t do this because your name goes into a data base (and the shit is still a federal crime no matter what state you’re in). Also, mexican drug cartels are heavily involved in the medical dispensaries in this state (I have first hand knowledge of this) and I don’t want them to have a dime of my money. I get it in other ways.
So here in CA , it is effectively legal and isn’t really taxed at all* because it’s technically illegal. This setup doesn’t really bother me much.
*I don’t know what kind of taxes the dispenseries pay.
“And actually the high taxes are probably reducing total revenue, because in case you hadn’t noticed, although it is slow, tobacco use continues to decrease.”
Again, if you actually LOOKED AT THE TABLE I LINKED TO you’d see that tobacco tax revenue HAS STEADILY INCREASED since 1977*.
*Not in every individual state.
Beer is taxed, wine is taxed, cigarettes are taxed, based on this precedent, why would you think it should not be taxed?
Growing your own would probably* be less expensive and less of a hassle than trying to get around the taxes by producing your own for any of those other drugs.
*Although I believe here in Maine they’ve made it a pain in the ass to grow your own for medical use because you have to have it secured. Can’t just grow a plant or two in your garden without, I believe, a fairly hefty fence around it.
John Morgan is still a heavy hitter in Florida. They’re going to go through the legislature in Florida to get it passed (or try to anyway). Having it as a constitutional amendment was stupid.

Maybe in 1970, not today. Even my doctor, an old hippie thinks legalization in Colorado was foolish. Today’s weed is far more potent than the old days. We had a number of overdoses requiring ambulance trips for a detox hospital stay. This all occurred during high tourist season last summer from fools who were too clueless to know what they were doing. Think LSD trips. Edibles are scary as hell. There have also been stories of the new weed bringing on mental illness issues in those who may be on the edge, depressed, etc. This new experiment will not end well.
You are such an idiot.
