Meanwhile, in North Dakota

Some crazy mofo’s did the first off-road iron distance in about 10 years (??).

Times between 17 and 27 hours. 9 hour+ bike splits.

There’s a sick twisted part of me that wants to try it next year…

I’ve been keeping my eye on this one. I’d love to hear some race reports!

That looks amazing. This just jumped way up on my list for next year (and I haven’t swum a stroke since I came out of Lake Okanogan into T1 in 2010). It might be worth digging my wetsuit out of storage for this one.

I’d do it but I’m not sure I can con my partner into making ND a vacation - or to run crew for me. It looks like a lot of “fun”

hard but fair bike course, insanely difficult run.

But I didn’t see anyone get a black t shirt, how will people know they did a hard race?

Damn, that video shows how tough that would be.

hey all - i’m the race director for the wilderman - it ended up being everything we hoped it would be and we’re excited to give it a go again next year with the addition of a half iron distance. there are a couple of race reports and results on the web-page now (scroll to the bottom). (www.thewilderman.com)

as for the run - it is bad ass and difficult. about half the distance is on double track or gravel, but the rest is in rugged country on very narrow singletrack like trails or creek bottom. It is all ‘runnable’ but after the bike (which isn’t anything to sneeze at) sections of it can feel pretty daunting. Next year we’re planning the start at 6 am instead of 8 (for the full) to give 2 more hours of daylight on the run which will help quite a bit.

top runners completed the first 10 miles of the run (which included about 7 miles of super hilly, technical running and/or creek bottom) in about 2 hours.

no black shirts - white shirts for finishers though. maybe tattoos at the finish line next year if there is enough interest.

cheers - andy

Just out of curiosity, why the 2.6 mile swim? I’m not saying that every swim has to be 2.4, but with a 2 loop swim, it seems you guys could have chosen just about any distance. Just trying to figure out your thought process…

it was 2.4 miles, not sure where you saw 2.6. if i put that somewhere it was a mistake…all the distances were, to the best of our measuring abilities, standard full distance triathlon distances

The youtube video link in the post up above says 2.6 mile swim.

just an error on the parts of the videographer i imagine!

The race sent me to the hospital with renal failure, but you can guarantee I will be back next year.

Dude, you are a racer!

Well thats not the GF would call it
.

Yes, I agree, thanks for the link, I think I am just stupid, stubborn and slow enough to do it
.

Finisher, Mike, with the single speed bike gets the MVP medal.

glad to know you are ok austin! heard from Brandon but nice to hear it from you too… you had a hell of a time out there. The word I used to describe the scene as people came into Aid 3 was ‘carnage’. you had it the worst perhaps, but there were lots of shattered folks out there in the middle of the night. rest well man and recover quickly!

Slowman and Herbert - it would be nice to see a front page writeup about Wilderman. If anything, the race deserves some attention for its spirit of adventure, if anything.

Thanks. Im feeling much better. I never thought I would be in the middle of a race thinking to myself " if I lay down in the middle of the trail someone will find me". Lucky for me it was Brandon and he took the the time to get me back to open ground, which is where I ran into you. But I learned a lot and will be back next year. Its a great race, run by great people. Im already looking forward to next year.
