McD boycott?

People in south Jersey are starting to boycott McDonalds, not for the obvious reasons - they refuse to pay the death benefit for a manager that was killed in a freak accident several years ago. The woman (42, I believe, married, with a couple of kids) was killed, along with two other women working early morning, about 4:30AM. a man driving a car in excess of 90 miles an hour jumped the curb and plowed into the restaurant. The manager had worked there for over two years and had recently been promoted to manager. Because of that (within 90 days), she was in a probationary period and not eligible for the insurance benefit. In McD’s favor, they did pay for her funeral, but c’mon! This corporation can’t pony up $40K? The company line is that she was not eligible because of the probationary period.

Huh, nobody reading this should be eating there to begin with. If this death benefit thing is not enough, more people should read Fast Food Nation and see how bad they really are with the manipulation and just downright underhanded business practices. Has anyone noticed how children of low income families are so overweight, and yet all the kids want is McD.

Fast Food Nation is a great book and a must read.

But a Quarter Pounder with Cheese is just so damn good! I still eat there, but I also try to exercise some (gasp!!!) self restraint.

(That sucks about the 40k, I think they ought to pony up the cash too.)

Wife and I haven’t ate a McD’s in several years. We’re already boycotting.

When I go, I go all the way for the double quarter pounder w/ cheese.

I noticed in the UK they sell a DOUBLE sausage mcmuffin with egg! We don’t even have that in the states…I thought everything here was supposed to be bigger?

<< Huh, nobody reading this should be eating there to begin with.

speak for yourself. At least once a week on this end, and tonight is probably going to be one of those nights.

haven’t eaten mcdonalds in about… 9 months? read fast food nation 2 months ago.

don’t plan on eating bk/mcd/wendy’s (except for their frosty’s!) again.

taco bell every blue moon… but, that’ll be once every couple months.

Qay off topic, but that is a pretty crappy mgt decision. My McD story is when we went to Italy a couple years back you could" American size" your McMeal. Ouch that hurts. Pretty cool frenchfry forks and clean bath rooms. G

was there ever reason to expect any better?

I no longer eat fast food, but I’ll forward the info to my friends. is there URL?

She was injured in the resturant while working, I don’t understand how they couldn’t be held responsible for the bills.

She was injured in the resturant while working, I don’t understand how they couldn’t be held responsible for the bills. **Well, let’s see. McDonald’s is not responsible because it did not do whatever caused her death. Moreover, since McDonald’s almost certainly neither owned nor leased the restaurant building, it was not responsible in any way for the condition of that building. Sometimes accidents happen, no one is to blame and you don’t have a lawsuit to pursue. ** ******** **McDonald’s also apparently entered into a specific contract with this individual in which she would not receive certain benefits until she had gone through a probationary period. She had not done so. Therefore, she was not entitled to the benefits. So she had a choice to make: buy her own ****insurance or take a chance. She took a chance and lost. Why should McDonald’s pay her anything at all? Her family should be grateful that it did what it did. Most employers wouldn’t. ** ******** **As far as McDonald’s food goes, I rarely eat there anymore. In fact, I rarely eat at any restaurant. But, if I am driving a long distance in my car and get hungry, I know that the McDonald’s at the next exit will have a clean bathroom, a clean place to eat, and will sell me a meal there will probably taste good even if an exclusive diet of McDonald’s would be no good for my heart. **

Why? Because she was injured on the job.

Why? Because she was injured on the job. **I am sure that McDonald’s is paying whatever Worker’s Comp in that state requires to be paid. But, that may be nothing depending upon the specific statute in question and how she died. **

I suppose I should rephrase that. I don’t understand how their workman’s compensation insurance couldn’t be held responsible for the bills.

Good info…Thanks. That’s intersting to know.

I suppose I should rephrase that. I don’t understand how their workman’s compensation insurance couldn’t be held responsible for the bills. **On that subject, I have almost no information since I don’t practice in either the state or the field of law. I do have the general understanding that there are exceptions, both from the coverage itself and from the otherwise exclusive nature of the coverage provided by Worker’s Comp, but have no interest in learning anything more than I know about the field. **

F’in fast food. Weened my self off of it over the past 18 months to just a very occasional snack.

Pretty close annalogy between McD and cigarets - both highly addictive, both marketed at children relentlessly, both hook you when your young, both kill you in the long run.

Only have two words - SKUM BAGS!!!

just saw some research the other day. 1 in 7 americans eats at mcd’s daily. mike call tonight, who gets tomorrow?

I haven’t eaten at McDonald’s since 1993, though I have been in a few since then to use the restroom. I’m a vegetarin now anyway so it’s not tough to avoid (they even put meat in the fries…)

I haven’t been to a Wal-mart since 1998, but that’s for another thread.

If you really need reasons to boycott Ronald, all you need is to see the documentary “Supersize”. That will give you all the reasons you need. You’ll need nothing else to never want to step foot in there again. We don’t even take the kids there except on the rare occasion. McD is nothing but little dropletes of death with friends, fun and flexible hours.
