Most of you know that fenty was at both eagleman and columbia tri’s as a competitor and he was there with the secret service.
My question is this: Did he have agents with him in the swim, bike , and run? What s the point of the SS if they are only going to be there for the start and finish while he is unprotected for the 5- 6 hrs of racing?
do mayors often get secret service protection? seems to be overkill.
I heard he had part of his motorcade with him as SAG support on the bike. I would imagine he had someone with him on the run. The swim would be a little more complicated.
“…he was there with the secret service.”
sure they were Secret Service?
He had a police detail, as any other big city mayor would have. I believe they followed him in a car when he was on the bike and were nearby on the run as well. This is a guy setting a GREAT example of bein active, not some P Diddy experience when he “ran” the NYC marathon.
Bob
Yeah, probably a DC detachment of security folks. As a big city mayor, that would seem the proper thing to do.
I have it second hand that he had a car next tom him in the dc marathon a few weeks back. My friend was a little nonplussed when it came by.
When I was at Columbia my first question of the day was, who are the large black men in dark suits? And why are they standing at the swim start of a triathlon? Once that question was answered, then I was wondering if he would have someone with him through the race.
I don’t know that answer.
I have no idea of this guy’s politics, but I think it’s cool to have a somewhat influential politician doing the same things I do, kind of how the crackheads felt when Marion Berry was mayor. (You didn’t really think this could pass without someone bringing him up did you?)
The b#!&h set Berry up!
devil’s in the details.
i sincerely doubt the security detail with hizzoner was Secret Service.
immense difference between them and a local security detachment…regardless of the appearance.
otherwise…nice indeed to have someone of note toeing the line.
AAAhh that makes more sense, I kept hearing it was SS
.
Well, Lance was apparently “surrounded” by bodyguards and thugs at NYC last year…
However it turns out that his bodyguards were Joan Benoit Samuelson and Alberto Salazar. I mean, I’m sure they could throw down in the Bronx if needed, but they’re hardly thug material.
On the run I spotted a couple of unmarked cars with DC plates parked on the side of the road and figured I’d see Fenty coming at me pretty soon. Sure enough, about a mile later I spotted him after the turnaround. At that point in the race I was thinking that if I had a car following me around I’d be at risk of jumping in and heading home.
I think Eagleman was probably a good stress relief for him before being thrown to the wolves on Monday regarding his recent DC Public Schools decisions.
I think in this particular case when people say “Secret Service” they mean security detachment much like “Xerox” means photocopy. A colloquialism.
I think that’s the case with the terminology here.
He had a one-man escort of a policeman on a bike when I passed him in the Cherry Blossom 10 miler earlier this year.
In addition to CB & Eagleman, he’s raced a marathon and another HIM so far in '07 - that I know of.
I think it’s great. *If *there’s an increase in security cost, I’m okay with it.
That would have beent he Kinetic half - same deal - MIB all around - they weren’t too thrilled about the prospect of dealing with 55 degree water appararently. But there were bike and run escorts.
When the governor of MN has run the Twin Cities Marathon, he’s been accompanied by a security detail (on bike). They actually had a portable external defibrillator along just in case!
