Maybe races can be won in transition

IM 70.3 Geelong from Xtri: “For the ladies, Yvonne Van Vlerken took the lead by the 2nd lap of the bike followed closely by short course star Sam Warriner. Although Warriner was 30s behind coming into T2, her lightning quick transition gave her a 90m lead over Van Vlerken onto the run.”

Warriner won the race by less than a minute over the world record holder Van Vlerken.

How fast do you think the average pro does the first 90 meters of the run in a half Ironman. My guess it is on the order of 20-25 seconds. That adds up to about the winning margin, 52 seconds in my book.

So they did have to run after the transition? There’s you answer. Race can be lost, not won, in the transition.

Depends, I guess, if you are the winner or loser as to how one would look at this.

Anyhow, the actual T2 difference was only 40 seconds so I guess she won it on the run. Seems she wasn’t really 30 seconds down coming off the bike as I really doubt she did the first 90 m in 10 seconds.

All I know is I am WAY too slow in transitions. More practice is needed.

I agree that races can be lost in transition. A few mistakes can cost you significant time in a competative race

Hey there Frank,

Sam’s currently working with Herbert on an article for the front page that will explain why she needed to use every little ‘trick’ in her armoury and have that lightning quick transition in order for the race not to be stolen away from her.

Keep your eyes peeled over the next day or two, it’ll make a great read I’m sure!

Stephen (Sam’s other half).

Maybe she can make a comment on how her other big transition is going.

With the apparent “domination” by the short course people in these longer events I am coming to the conclusion it is “easier” to teach people, with natural good speed, endurance than those, with natural good endurance, speed. That means there was never any hope for me. Hopefully, Sam will consider moving up to the full distance next year if it continues to go well for her. I know Siri’s goal is to have one of her athletes knock Chrissy off soon - she has several with potential. Maybe Sam is the one. Good luck.

In Herbert’s article it says it was Sam’s first race over this distance. He meant it was Sam’a first race in a 70.3 race I guess?

Also was the mens race run in conjunction with the womans race? It sounds a bit strange the Yvonnes partner was out there racing at the same time.

A bit confused by a bit of stuff in that article on the ST homepage.

It would have been interesting to hear a bit more background in the ST article also. Are there any other triathltes that have started ther triathlon carreer in their late 20’s and done so well? will be surprised if there ever has been.

Great work.

G.

I forget which race, and it was a while ago, but Molina got the fastest S, B and R splits, but placed 2nd.

Apparently his wave started 5 minutes after the pro women…
