I have a 7800 crank that I’m using a 7900 DA BB with; seems “ok”. I see the option to just replace the sealed bearing cartridges w/ceramic. I know there’s lots of opinions on this but if I was going to would it be o.k. to simply get the cartridge vs. the entire BB?
Also, given how cheap I am and how much the bike is ridden through wet weather before a BB change I’m tempted to just throw another 7900 for another year (I typically change BB & chain every year so right around 5000-6000 mi)
Thoughts?
Bbs are pretty cheap. I usually swap the whole thing when i find play in the crank or when it is gritty feeling and a good cleaning doesn’t bring it to a not gritty feeling.
It’s not gritty, I’ve just had it on since last summer and road 2-3x/week in wet weather.
How are you cleaning it btw?
If it feels smooth and there is no play, leave it until there is. For cleaning, I usually just pull the cranks and wipe it down with some mild degreaser and then put some grease back in it. Once I take it out, it usually isn’t going back in.
Mine are Fsa and gxp English thread ins (FYI in case it matters to you).
